Overview

The position is the Corporate Controller, who is responsible for the financial management and control of the corporate functions of the organization. The Corporate Controller leads the corporate accounting team and works collaboratively with all functions of the business. The Corporate Controller is responsible for the financial reporting, tax compliance, budget and forecasting, and internal controls of the organization. The responsibility is to ensure these responsibilities are completed accurately, timely, and effectively.

Our Team

We are a high-performing, Calgary-based, property development and management company overseeing a diverse national property portfolio centered in Alberta. The portfolio includes retail, office, and light industrial properties. Our private company is owned by two Calgary Entrepreneurs, supported by our team of over 20 individuals. Our team of self-driven individuals operates to deliver first-rate service to all tenants and investors.

Responsibilities & Duties

CORPORATE ACCOUNTING OVERSIGHT

  • Manage and oversee the corporate accounting functions within the group including responsibilities for all active business and holding companies
  • Review and manage working paper files
  • Prepare and support more complex accounting treatments
  • Monitor and achieve reporting deadlines
  • Tax Return preparation/review coordination
  • Perform corporate roll-up and consolidation processes
  • Prepare Annual Bank Packages including FMV Balance Sheets for Owners’ entities
  • Oversee integration of Property and Project Accounting to Corporate Accounting
  • Coordinate Annual Reviews with External Accountants
  • 2 Direct reports
  • Complete annual performance reviews
  • Deploy resources as best available.

FORECASTING AND MODELLING

  • Maintain and amend custom cash flow forecasts for Owners considering corporate and personal finance implications. Monthly re-forecasting based on actual results
  • Incorporate Development Group’s projects into budgets and Identify financing requirements
  • Initiate and manage the corporate annual budgeting process
  • Prepare annual budget and maintain the detailed cash-flow forecast for the Cascade Shops Project
  • Some basic derivative modelling for interest rate derivatives

FINANCING AND TREASURY

  • Identify financing requirements for corporate entities
  • Support the VP, Investment Management in evaluating mortgage and corporate loan options
  • Submit annual corporate loan reporting packages and covenant calculations
  • Banking control – maintain signature cards, review electronic banking transactions

TAX STRATEGY AND COMPLIANCE

  • Coordinate tax review, compliance reporting, and strategy with external accountants
  • Monitor execution of tax strategies in light of changing developments
  • Manage all income tax and GST examinations and audits from CRA
  • Annual filing and distribution of T5 Slips to investors

CORPORATE PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Manage internal projects assigned with support from administrative staff
  • Immediate oversight of AP Automation project
  • Evaluate software options and make recommendation
  • Work with provider in installation and onboarding of software
  • Oversee the transition to in office including establishing best-practices
  • Identify and recommend continued projects for improving practices within the office

INTERNAL CONTROLS

  • Oversee execution of controls and internal tasks throughout the year
  • Perform annual review of process documentation and update as required
  • Design checklists and other process evidence where required

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will possess the following

  • CPA Designation in good standing
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability to manage a team
  • Financial reporting experience would be a benefit
  • Be flexible and adaptable, being able to prioritize and balance multiple tasks, in a variety of locations, in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Familiarity with MRI Software suite would be beneficial

Employment Terms & Benefits

This is a permanent, full-time, salaried position, which will be subject to three-month probationary period. We are offering a competitive compensation package with will include a Base Salary, Annual Performance Bonus, and Benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience
