Louis Riel Institute
As an affiliate of the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the Louis Riel Institute (LRI) is responsible to the Métis people of Manitoba to provide programs, resources and services related to education and culture. The Louis Riel Institute seeks to fill one Full-time Métis History & Culture Instructor position located in Winnipeg, MB.
Reporting to the Cultural Programming Manager, the Métis History & Culture Instructor is responsible for researching, developing, planning and implementing Métis History & Cultural programming, including instructing on-site in the physical classroom environment and implementing and facilitating web-based courses. This position may require varying hours based on the needs of the department, students and other duties as assigned.
Job Duties/Competencies:
Research, develop and deliver Métis History and Cultural training and resources
Continual learning of Métis History and Culture
- Deliver course content in a variety of ways including direct in-person classroom instruction and web-based learning
- Use a variety of creative and motivating approaches to stimulate learning within a distributed teaching-learning classroom environment
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs, abilities, and interests
- Use computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations
- Facilitate and deliver Red River Métis History and Cultural training to a variety of venues including schools, MMF departments and outside organizations
- Use a variety of creative and motivating approaches for online learning to stimulate learning within a distributed teaching-learning in an online and in person setting
- Deliver course content in a variety of ways
- Prepare reports on students and activities as required by administration.
- Self-reflect and review with PM as an instructor in order to implement any changes needed to deliver a consistently quality program.
- Review instructional content, methods, and student evaluations to assess strengths and weaknesses, and to develop recommendations for course revision, development, or elimination
· Collect images and videos for use in our social media platforms.
· Create interactive and engaging presentations for online use
· Film, photo, edit materials for use in presentations
- Develop supplementary resources for courses
- Prepare reports on students and activities as required by administration
- Recommend and implement any changes needed to deliver a consistently quality program
- Act as liaison with affiliates and maintain industry relationships
- Provide historical teaching and support to team members
- Provide support to Riel House Supervisor
- Track and maintain cultural inventory and all items used in the program
- Adhere to budgets and create reports on projects as requested
- Support planning events as requested, including attending, teaching and facilitating
Skills and Qualifications:
· Highschool diploma required, and University/College Education or equivalent work experience preferred
· Post-Secondary or equivalent life learning of Métis History and Culture required
· Knowledge of the Michif Language preferred
· Self-motivated with the ability to meet deadlines while multitasking
· Comfortable with public speaking
· Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
· Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
· Excellent communication skills: both written and verbal
· Experience working with youth and large groups
· Experience working in a not-for-profit organization and Indigenous community considered an asset
· Knowledge of Métis culture, LRI programs and services is a definite asset
· General knowledge of MMF programs, services, and governance
· Ability to travel, valid Manitoba Driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle
· Must hold valid criminal record and child abuse registry checks
· Knowledge of at least 1 Red River Métis tradition art or cultural component
· Knowledge of Red River Métis Nation history and culture
· Ability to self-direct study and research
· Ability to present online and in person
· Good judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Knowledge of LRI and MMF programs and services
· Attention to detail and strong interpersonal skills
· Organizational and team leadership
· Must hold valid criminal records and child abuse registry checks
