Salary Range: $24.54 - $25.31 per hour (Start rate: $24.54 per hour in accordance with collective agreement requirements)
Hours: Various
Shifts: 8 & 12 hour shifts; days/evenings/weekends
Status: Permanent Part-time

The Neurovascular Unit (NVU) at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre is the first unit of its kind in Canada. We champion a vision of right environment, for the right patient at the right time. Ours is a world-class care centre offering a 26 bed in-patient unit which includes 6 High Acuity Level II beds for patients who require specialized monitoring and extra care and 4 telemetry beds for patients who require cardiac monitoring.
Neurovascular health involves the brain, spinal cord and blood vessels. Disorders and conditions of the neurovascular system include:
blood vessel aneurysms
stroke
vascular malformations of the brain and spinal cord
The Patient Care Assistant participates in direct and indirect patient care activities, in order to carry out the multidisciplinary plan of care. The scope of activities is directed and assigned by the Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse member of the team. To support the provision of excellent patient care, the principal responsibilities of the Patient Care Assistant include: performing basic patient care functions which contribute to the implementation of the multidisciplinary plan of care; assisting with patient nutritional needs; performing interventions to collect and document patient care information; reporting appropriate information; ensuring patient oxygen therapy is maintained; performing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation functions, as required; practicing infection control and safety measures to maintain the highest standard of patient care/safety, ensuring a clean and safe environment for patient care/treatment; contributing to patient assessment and participating in identifying patient care priorities; performing departmental duties; following strict adherence to confidentiality policies; attending seminars, workshops and clinic days to facilitate personal and professional growth; performing other duties consistent to the job classification or clinical specialty, as required.
Qualifications
At minimum, completion of high school
Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program
Completion of a Health Care Aide/PSW Program at the certificate level required
Recent six (6) months direct patient care experience
Ability to speak, read, write and comprehend the English language
Demonstrated independence, a positive attitude and the willingness to work effectively in a team
Ability to facilitate unit functioning and smooth patient care flow
Ability to maintain a consistent level of productivity and efficiency.
Ability to perform responsibilities in a courteous manner
Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards
Exercise initiative and good judgment with ability to multi-task
Compliance with confidentiality requirements under UHN Privacy Policy
Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
Complies with UHN and departmental policies
Client service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
Ability to meet the physical demands of the job required including: ability to stand, stoop, walk, bend, lift, push, pull and reach without any physical discomfort on a continuous basis; transferring patients with appropriate assistance; ability to stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift in excess of 40 kg.
May be required to work at multiple areas as well as rotating shifts in emergency situations
