The Building Operator, under the direction of the Facilities Manager will primarily be responsible to adhere to established safe working procedures and will ensure high standards of workmanship and efficiency. The Building Operator will be responsible for ensuring that the building’s mechanical systems and their operations are conducted in a safe and efficient manner. The Building Operator will also be part of the Facilities team and support the greater school community as a whole.

Ensure high standards of workmanship and efficiency
Adhere to company policies and standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety, and complete and on-time delivery
Ensure compliance with all relevant safety legislation, health and safety, and other statutory requirements
Ensure accurate and timely project close date; help supervisors to adjust work schedules to ensure deadlines are met
Assist in the resolution of design issues, material defects, and equipment problems
Assist with job site administration duties, such as daily logs, maintenance and safety checks on equipment and systems as required.
Draft specific equipment operating procedures
Control traffic passing near, in, and around the school as required
Clean, maintain, and repair machinery, equipment, and tools
Operate and maintain the HVAC(including pneumatic), plumbing and electrical systems, as well as other mechanical equipment and ensure all are in good working order
Schedule and direct contractors
Develop and maintain positive relationships with contractors and inspection authorities.
Occasional alarm emergency response necessary during off shift hours
Perform a wide range of general building maintenance duties as assigned, including outdoor work in poor conditions.
Maintain familiarity with building systems including but not limited to building automation, security and fire alarm systems.
Receive and organize deliveries
Other duties as assigned
Events Support
Support faculty and staff, including the events coordinator and students for event planning, preparation and execution
Physical set-up and takedown of all events and functions
Set construction, sound and lighting technical support
Direct traffic for school events

Health & Safety
Provide a safe environment at all times for students, staff, visitors and contractors at all times.
Work in strict accordance with all school safety policies and with the occupational health and safety act.

This job involves the normal range of movement for facility positions, physical labour, lifting, including working with ladders, long periods of standing, and working outside in all conditions. Dirty/messy situations are to be expected. Safe work habits are to be maintained at all times.

Degree or diploma in a related field considered an asset
Five years related maintenance and building operator experience
Valid driver’s license
A certification in building operations considered an asset
Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
Ability to respond quickly in a dynamic and changing environment
Ability to lift heavy objects, walk, and stand for long periods of time
Ability to perform strenuous physical labour
Ability to work individually as well as part of a team
Ability to deal with students, parents and teachers cheerfully, enthusiastically, courteously, patiently and with discretion is fundamental to the performance of this job
Availability to work flexible hours and/or a floating shift
Knowledge of Ontario Fire Code, Building Code, Canadian Electrical Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislation including “Confined space” entry procedures and relevant testing equipment.
Work in strict accordance with the OHSA and school safety policies at all times
Positive problem solver who takes initiative in a proactive manner
Willingness to participate in job related training as required
