1.0 FTE Humanities/Religion - Maternity Leave Contract Start Date: August 31, 2026
St. Thomas More Collegiate, a progressive co-ed Blessed Edmund Rice Christian Brother Catholic Independent high school in Burnaby, B.C., is seeking a secondary school educator to join our Humanities and Religion departments to cover a maternity leave for one full school year. The successful candidate will be expected to be part of a collaborative teaching team within our Humanities department whose goal is the positive growth and development of students. This full time temporary position will encompass Humanities (English and/or Social Studies) and potentially Religion courses with the final course load dependent in consultation with the Administration and the relevant experience of the successful candidate.
Our Social Studies program is broad and dynamic. Students learn about history, geography, culture, economics, law, government, social organization, and current issues and events. Students also learn how to belong to, and take responsibility for, the various communities of which they are a member: local school and neighbourhood, town and province, country and world.
STMC's English courses are designed to help students develop into imaginative thinkers, powerful analysts, cogent writers, and informed citizens. By promoting fine writing, keen powers of analysis, and a true love of speaking, we allow students to explore the world of literature through their own experiences. Throughout their time at STMC, students learn to develop their rhetorical crafts and leave as assertive and sophisticated speakers.
The mission and vision of the Religion Department are based on the Essential Elements of a Christian Brother education. We strive to enrich the spiritual lives of our students and encourage them to manifest their faith through instruction, community service and personal growth. Overall, through our teaching, mission collections, service program and the presence of the Christian Brothers living and volunteering at the school, the Religion Department works to foster a positive religious experience for our community.
Preference will be given to applicants with previous secondary school experience teaching Humanities and/or Religion courses and a Bachelor's Degree in Education.
Potential candidates must be a member, or be in the process of becoming a member, of the British Columbia College of Teachers or hold a BC Independent School Teacher's Certificate. Letters of application, accompanied by a resume, and the names of two referees, should be received in a timely manner.
Closing Date: Monday June 28, however interviews may commence prior to the closing date.
