The ‘EDIA Project’ will build on existing work and structures at VIU, to collect and analyze evidence, and develop, implement, monitor and evaluate initiatives, policies, processes and programs that foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of the VIU community.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisor will play a key role in advancing VIU’s equity, diversity and inclusion practices, through overseeing baseline needs-assessment and information-gathering strategies, and advising and supporting the VIU EDIA Project Working Group in developing a comprehensive equity, diversity and inclusion framework for the University.

Leadership will begin with gathering information from across the post-secondary sector and the VIU community on existing equity, diversity and inclusion-related research, education, training and related initiatives, including conducting needs analyses, and providing expertise, support, and recommendations to the EDIA Project Working Group and guide the creation, integration, implementation, evaluation and continual improvement of strategies to ensure optimal equity, diversity and inclusion practices across the University, including:

Consulting with key senior leadership, administration, faculty, and service areas, as well as committees, Canada Research Chairs and Candidates, and additional individuals and groups as needed, to assemble comprehensive baseline information on current research, recruitment, education, training and other initiatives and systems related to equity, diversity and inclusion occurring across all VIU campuses;
Overseeing the design of the research methods and evaluation strategies to collect data and evidence;
Overseeing the implementation of data collection and consultation as part of the information-gathering and benchmarking of existing equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives at VIU;
Overseeing the investigation of EDI initiatives in peer universities from the Alliance for Canadian Comprehensive Research Universities (ACCRU) and Universities Canada regarding such initiatives;
Identifying needs and gap analyses based on information obtained, as well as identifying successes and promising existing initiatives;
Conducting detailed review of existing, proposed and suggested initiatives and programs in development, to ensure alignment with core values and optimal use of resources in planning and executing equity, diversity and inclusion-related work;
Providing summary and detailed reports of the resulting equity, diversity and inclusion benchmark information, along with expert guidance, advice and support, to the EDIA Project Working Group;
Contributing, in collaboration with existing University resources and the EDIA Project Working Group, to the creation of sustainable, innovative and evidence-based strategies on a broad range of equity diversity and inclusion-related topics, including: optimal strategies for equitable and inclusive recruitment, retention and promotion of faculty, administration and staff; optimal strategies for equitable and inclusive student recruitment and support, coordination and collaboration amongst equity-related programs, systems and resources on University campuses; and integration of both proactive and responsive strategies for enhancing and maintaining equity, diversity and inclusion throughout all University systems;
Working collaboratively with institutional leaders and the EDIA Project Working Group to advance VIU’s broader equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives and goals; and
Carrying out additional engagement and supportive activities and systems for information-gathering, consultation, communication and education on the EDIA Project on an ongoing basis.

Graduate Degree in a relevant discipline from an appropriately accredited institution. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in areas related to diversity, equity, inclusion and human rights. A combination of experience and education may be considered.

Extensive expertise in education and training methodologies related to equity, diversity and inclusion.
Experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of strategic plans in the areas of equity, diversity, equity and inclusion.
Excellent proven interpersonal and intercultural oral and written communication skills and organizational planning abilities.
Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to build rapport and engage in a collaborative approach to building consensus and advising.
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, evaluation, assessment and evidence-based decision making.
Familiar with Microsoft Office software and online survey programming and testing resources.
Ability to exercise excellent judgment and work well under pressure.
Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion regarding confidential matters.
Extensive experience working as part of a team with multiple stakeholders in a complex, diverse environment.
