Job Description
King’s Indian Restaurant is looking for an experienced Tandoor Chef / Indian Cook to join our kitchen team in Cambridge, Ontario. The ideal candidate should have strong professional tandoor experience along with well-rounded knowledge of Indian cooking and kitchen operations.
We are looking for a versatile and dependable chef who can independently manage the tandoor station, contribute to other areas of the kitchen when required, and maintain consistent standards of quality, taste, presentation and food safety in a fast-paced restaurant environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the tandoor station independently, including preparation, temperature and heat management, cooking, timing and organization of the station to ensure consistent quality and efficient service throughout the shift.
- Prepare and execute daily kitchen production and mise en place, including marinades, dough preparation, cutting, portioning and ingredient preparation while ensuring adequate preparation levels for smooth lunch and dinner service.
- Support and work across other Indian kitchen stations when required, including curry, gravy, appetizer, frying and general cooking operations, while following the restaurant’s recipes, preparation methods, portion standards and presentation guidelines.
- Maintain consistency and quality across food preparation and service by monitoring taste, texture, cooking, portioning and presentation while managing multiple orders efficiently during high-volume periods.
- Maintain an organized, clean and food-safe kitchen environment by following proper food handling, storage, labeling, rotation, temperature control, sanitation and cross-contamination prevention procedures throughout the shift.
- Work closely with the kitchen team to maintain efficient operations, coordinate order timing, monitor preparation and ingredient levels, minimize unnecessary food waste, communicate operational requirements and assist with opening, closing and general kitchen responsibilities as needed.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in an Indian restaurant kitchen, with strong hands-on experience operating and independently managing a commercial tandoor in a fast-paced restaurant environment.
- Strong knowledge of Indian cooking techniques and kitchen preparation, including tandoor cooking, Indian breads, marinades, curries, gravies, appetizers, frying and general Indian food preparation.
- Ability to work as a versatile chef across multiple kitchen stations, confidently supporting different areas of the kitchen when required while maintaining speed, organization, consistency and food quality.
- Strong understanding of professional kitchen organization and production, including mise en place, portion control, standardized recipes, ingredient preparation, food storage, inventory awareness and waste control.
- Thorough understanding of food safety and sanitation practices, including safe food handling, cooking and holding temperatures, proper storage, prevention of cross-contamination and maintaining a clean and sanitary workstation.
- Strong teamwork, communication and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple orders, coordinate effectively with other kitchen staff and remain reliable, organized and professional during high-volume service.
