BRANCH: Facilities Maintenance
HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Basic Function: Reporting to the Facilities Maintenance Manager, this position is responsible for the supervision of all aspects of infrastructure, buildings and services on site. This includes preventive maintenance work, state of good repair work, inspections, testing, projects, construction operations related to low and high voltage electrical equipment and systems, water distribution equipment and systems, sanitary and storm sewers, storm water ponds and waterfall pumps, fire alarm system, sprinkler systems, fire hydrants, communications and data systems cabling, Splash pad, pool and fish/reptile tank filtration and sanitation systems. This position will assist and provide support in implementing the approved Strategic Plan.
Interviews, selects, trains, supervises and directs, evaluates, schedules and disciplines assigned staff.
Monitors and records time and attendance of staff.
Ensures the timely and efficient preparation of all required reports and statements and the proper maintenance of all required records.
Organizes and lays out work programs for staff assigned to the Unit.
Costs and ensures all necessary materials are available for the completion of assigned work orders.
Prepares and administers annual budget for the Unit.
Maintains spare parts and stock inventory and re-orders as required including product research and cost analysis
Implements and operates continuous preventative maintenance program.
Ensures proper operation, maintenance and preventative measures are taken in regards to all Zoo electrical, plumbing, pool and tank filtration, fire alarm, storm water ponds and waterfall pumps, , storm and sanitary sewers, sprinkler systems, fire hydrants, public address, lighting systems, communications and data system cabling.
Schedules and keeps accurate record of all repairs and maintenance performed by the Unit.
Ensures all legislation and applicable regulations are complied with.
Responsible for co-ordination of contractors work related to the Unit including obtaining quotes, reviewing specifications and drawings and ensuring work is completed in accordance with project documents.
Makes recommendations regarding the replacement, upgrading or purchase of equipment or machinery required to maintain the physical plant.
Responsible for ensuring the good maintenance and cleanliness of all tools, equipment and the welding, electrical and plumbing shop areas also all electrical equipment and pump / filter rooms.
Responsible for administering the Zoo's Dig Permit System to ensure protection of underground services.
Responsible for ensuring compliance with GHS legislation, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Toronto Zoo Safety Policies; ensuring that all employees work in a safe and hygienic manner, with the appropriate protective equipment and that all accidents and hazards within his/her area of responsibility are promptly investigated and corrective action taken.
Assists guests on-site as required and ensures excellent customer service is provided by Zoo staff.
Other related duties as requested by the Manager.
Must possess a trade certificate/license valid in the Province of Ontario, as a construction & electrician 309A or plumber 306A.
Must have a minimum five (5) years’ experience in either the electrical or plumbing trade, two (2) of which have been at a supervisory level, preferable in a unionized environment.
Must possess a thorough working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, welding, fire alarm equipment, maintenance procedure and practices.
Must be knowledgeable in high voltage switching systems, written switching sequences, emergency power transfer switches and generation systems.
Must be able to read blueprints and schematic drawings.
Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Must be capable of maintaining accurate, up to date records.
Must possess a demonstrated ability to effectively organize and lay out work programs.
Must be able to produce brief, but accurate reports and written recommendations.
Must possess an unrestricted Class G driver's licence along with a good driving record.
Must possess a working knowledge of GHS legislation, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Plumbing Code, and the Ontario Electrical Code.
Must be knowledgeable in the use of computerized programs and systems, including word processing, E-mail and maintenance management.
Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
