Auxiliary workers support the success of our operation by performing important community work on an as-required basis. This can be to help fill vacant shifts or address added seasonal workloads. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of vehicles while transporting materials, equipment, parts, supplies and employees on a variety of Fleet Operations tasks. Vehicles covered in this class include tandem or single axle dump trucks, one- or two-ton dump trucks, and other general work style vehicles. Successful applicants would be engaged on an on-call basis, therefore, hours of work will vary.

Conduct pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections of the commercial vehicle operated.

Load and unload vehicles.

Participate as a member of the work crew, undertaking labouring and other routine construction and maintenance tasks on job sites, under the direction of the job site supervisor.

Complete safety reports and required documentation.

Support general Fleet Operations duties including but not limited to delivering or picking up vehicles, ensuring a safe and clean work site.

Knowledge of safe truck driving techniques as applied to municipal maintenance and construction operations, including safe and efficient operation of vehicles while transporting materials, equipment, parts, supplies and employees on a variety of tasks.

Knowledge of municipal streets and traffic routes.
-
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work as well as safe work procedures, practices, methods and materials involved in Fleet Operation.

Skill in the use and operation of a variety of power and hand tools, materials and equipment used in the work.

Ability to safely operate vehicles of various types, including vehicles with trailers carrying equipment etc.

Ability to drive in non-standard areas such as dump sites and gravel pits and to safely maneuver vehicle under non-standard driving conditions.

Ability to lift, carry and push in excess of 20 kg (45 lbs) on a regular and/or repetitive basis.

Ability to carry out written and oral instructions.

Ability to assist and participate in labouring work at job sites.

Ability to orient and mentor new staff in the work.

Ability to use tact and courtesy in contact with members of the public and staff and project a positive image of the City at all times.

Possess a strong mechanical aptitude.

Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented with up to one (1) year experience in operating a truck.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or higher) for the Province of British Columbia with a clean driver’s abstract.

Work may be performed in a closed cab with regular exposure to vibration from extended periods of sitting.

Light and heavy physical effort are required to carry out duties such as shovelling, raking, lifting etc.

Requires working in and around high traffic areas.

Regular exposure to noise from vehicle traffic and equipment at job sites as well as exposure to dust, exhaust and other types of fumes and traffic conditions.

Extended periods of mental concentration and visual effort are required.
