About the Role
The Food Buyer plays a key role in ensuring product availability, managing supplier relationships, maintaining optimal inventory levels, and supporting the efficient movement of products throughout the supply chain. This is a hands-on position ideal for someone who enjoys balancing purchasing, planning, logistics, and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.
As part of a small and collaborative team, you'll have the opportunity to take ownership of your category responsibilities while working closely with Sales, Warehouse, and Customer Service teams to support business goals and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Source and purchase food products from domestic and international suppliers.
- Manage purchase orders, supplier communications, and delivery schedules.
- Monitor inventory levels and demand trends to ensure product availability while minimizing excess stock.
- Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships, including pricing reviews, performance monitoring, and issue resolution.
- Coordinate imported products with freight forwarders, customs brokers, carriers, and warehouse partners.
- Support cost-management initiatives through effective sourcing, negotiation, and inventory planning.
- Maintain accurate product, vendor, and purchasing information within company systems.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to support promotions, forecast demand, and address supply challenges.
- Assist with food safety, traceability, compliance, and product quality initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, efficiencies, and overall supply chain performance.
What You'll Bring
- 2–5 years of experience in purchasing, procurement, inventory management, logistics, or supply chain.
- Experience in food distribution, grocery, wholesale, foodservice, or a related industry is preferred.
- Strong understanding of inventory planning, replenishment, and supplier management.
- Experience with international sourcing, imports, or logistics coordination is considered an asset.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
- Strong communication and relationship-building abilities, with the confidence to work directly with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience working with ERP, purchasing, inventory management, or warehouse management systems. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is considered a strong asset.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
- Diploma or degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Commerce, Logistics, or a related field is preferred.
