JOB FUNCTION:
The Health and Safety Specialist supports the H&S and Environmental Committee for the division ensuring regulatory compliance as well as developing procedure, training, and committees to support same. This role establishes and promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident free, environmentally sound, and healthy work environment.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL REQUIRED:
- Undergraduate degree in related field
- 5+ years progressive health & safety experience in a manufacturing environment
- Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills coupled with expert Excel, Word, Database capabilities
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of Industrial Ergonomics, desired
- Fluent in English both written and verbal.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
One focus area of the Health & Safety mission is to provide tools, resources, and environments that support safe, efficient, healthy behaviors and encourage employees to proactively manage their health and wellbeing.
This position entails maintaining accurate daily, weekly, and monthly metrics to report to onsite management teams and corporate based reporting systems. This person will support management’s efforts to ensure compliance with all Safety Program expectations and applicable federal & state laws. You will also conducts risk assessments related to jobs performed (Job Hazard Analysis) and new equipment introductions. In addition, you are responsible for recommending appropriate risk mitigation measures to management, including ergonomics.
- Implements and maintains all Health & Safety / Environmental policies and procedures as per the OH&S and other relevant Federal, Provincial or internal requirements.
- Supports the HSE &, Ergonomics Assessment and related Inspections and Audits and resulting Action Plans.
- Inspect or tour organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, and recommends corrective or preventative measures where indicated.
- Active member of Safety Group ensuring compliance with WSIB, Audit and practices, communication of Best Practices, attends all meetings
- Liaison with HRM and HSE to manage the Modified Work Program along with the Disability Claims in order to facilitate the employee’s return to work on a timely basis.
- Arranges H&S / Ergonomics Meetings, notifies members, participates as a Joint Health & Safety member, as well as sets up / records meeting minutes / initiates monthly workplace inspections.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY:
a) Report all incidents, accidents and/or hazards.
b) Wear and/or use the appropriate personal protective equipment as required for the position (defined).
c) Performs housekeeping activities as required.
d) Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), particularly the "Duties of Workers" as stated in section 28 of the Act.
e) Comply with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSI Act)
f) Participate and cooperate with the Joint Health and Safety Committee to improve company safety.
g) Understand and use the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) to ensure the safe handling, using, storing and disposing of hazardous products in the workplace.
h) Comply with all Health and Safety rules, policies and procedures of the division and as stated in the Employee and/or Managers Handbook.
EMPLOYEE RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATION:
a) Communicates with administrative, professional, plant and management staff as required.
b) Provide and/or participate in training as required.
c) Perform compulsory overtime as necessary when overtime is within legislative and Company requirements.
d) Comply with Company rules, policies and procedures as stated in the Employee Handbook.
e) Perform other work duties when assigned by your supervisor.
ENVIRONMENTAL:
a) Reports to supervisor any incident (or potential hazard) where damage to the environment (air, water, soil) might occur.
b) Work in compliance with ISO14001 Policy, environmental legislation and Company issued policies and procedures.
