Higher Ground Consulting (HGC) is seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer to join our growing Renewable Energy team. Reporting to the Vice President of Renewables, this person will work throughout the lifecycle of projects from initiation to design to construction.
Renewable energy is the fastest growing part of our business, and we work on solar, hydrogen, EV, wind, pumped hydro storage, and battery storage projects. The successful applicant will work in our established Electrical Vehicle (EV) Engineering Alliance working on some of the largest fleet EV charging projects across North America. This includes technology and project evaluation, implementation of self generation and energy storage systems, grid connections, and overall site design. This is an opportunity to technically anchor a rapidly growing team in a fast growth sector, while working with cutting-edge technologies.
RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
· Oversee the design and specification of medium and low voltage projects, with a focus on heavy duty fleet applications
· Examine equipment needs, including new technologies
· Input to project budget estimates and capital cost estimates
· Collaborate with OEM engineers to design and apply new system processes
· Define site power needs and power balance
· Ensure all electrical components of the siteworks communicate properly with each other and the network back end
· Ensure that installations and applications are in line with customer needs and applicable code and safety standards
· Composition of construction work packages
· Field inspection and QA/QC
· Resource planning, including the management of subconsultants and growing the in-house team
· Project reporting and change management
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
· Post-secondary degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, or equivalent
· Registered as a P.Eng. in Canada or PE in the US
· 5+ years of experience in designing and specifying LV and MV systems in a commercial or industrial setting
· Familiarity with the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and National Electrical Code (NEC)
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team
· Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
· Flexible and open to changing priorities and multi-tasking
· Applicant must be willing to travel to client sites as required on a project basis
· Legally entitled to work in Canada and travel to the US
THE FOLLOWING WILL BE CONSIDERED AN ASSET:
· Registration in the US as a PE, especially in California
· Experience in the design and installation of Level 3 DC Fast Chargers
· Experience working with multiple energy sources including self power generation, battery storage and grid interconnect
· Creative, strategic, forward-thinking mindset
· Adaptable to flexible work schedule when required to meet deadlines

This position will be based in our head office in downtown Calgary, Alberta. Higher Ground Consulting works on a basis of mutual trust and respect with our employees. We want our people to be regularly in the office to foster communication, culture, and efficiency, however we do not mandate specific office time or working schedules. We have a relaxed, flexible and dog-friendly office. This position will work with clients and team members in multiple locations across Canada and the US.
