Salary Range: $27.96 - $34.96 per hour (Commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN compensation and policy)
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Status: Temporary Full-Time (1 year)

University Health Network (UHN) is a research hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto and a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. Working under the direction of the Investigator and/or senior staff, the Research Technician II performs moderately complex laboratory procedures and experiments in the cell and molecular biology of the DNA damage response, radiotherapy and how this may be exploited to improve cancer treatment. The Research Technician will primarily perform bioassays (western blot, RT-qPCR, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemisty), gene cloning and tissue culture. Experience with animal work in mice is an asset. The candidate will also be expected to compile, interpret and analyse experimental results; communicate and maintain records of experimental data; monitor, order, and maintaining lab inventories of biological/chemical agents, supplies, animals and/or equipment; maintaining records of safety training and other health and safety paperwork. The candidate will additionally be expected to participate in lab and inter-lab meetings.

Working in a fast-paced environment, we require a biologist with strong tissue culture and cell biology/molecular biology experience who can multi-task and enjoy contributing to research at many levels. The lab is situated in the Princess Margaret Cancer Research Tower. Thus, the candidate will be part of a rich and vibrant scientific community.

Qualifications:
At minimum, a B.Sc in Biological Sciences (M.Sc preferred)
At minimum, three (3) years of experience in biomedical laboratory research
Strong background and working experience in molecular biology, biochemistry and microscopy techniques is required
Experience with handling mice and conducting animal experiments, or a willingness to learn is an asset
Excellence in 2D mammalian cell culture is expected. Experience with 3D culturing methods or stem cell research methodologies is an asset.
Knowledge in bioinformatics is an asset
Excellent problem recognition and problem solving abilities
Demonstrated interest and ability in continuous learning
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational skills
Computer literacy

Key Duties:
Conduct research, and accurately record and interpret results\
Ensure the smooth daily operation of an active research lab, including animal colony
Order and expedite supplies
Train staff and students on established procedures
Maintain equipment
Maintain lab inventory of supplies and reagents
Implement new laboratory techniques and technical developments
Utilize various software and web-based tools for research, lab organization as well as performing mathematical calculations for data analysis

The applicant may also be expected to participate in data analysis including bioinformatics and biostatistics. At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall mission of the facility.
