As we continue to expand, we are looking for a part time accountant and fractional CFO who can support our day to day financial operations while also providing higher level financial guidance.
Role Overview
The Part Time Accountant / Fractional CFO will support Novus Tech Group across accounting, financial reporting, cash flow management, forecasting, budgeting, tax filing, compliance, and strategic financial planning.
This role is ideal for a CPA who is comfortable handling practical accounting work while also helping leadership understand the financial health of the business. We are looking for someone who can keep our books organized, complete required filings, improve reporting, identify financial risks and opportunities, and provide clear recommendations that support sustainable growth.
The right person should be detail oriented, practical, organized, and comfortable working with a small business leadership team. This role will require someone who can operate at both a hands on accounting level and a higher level advisory level when needed.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting and Bookkeeping Oversight
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure transactions are categorized correctly
- Review monthly bookkeeping and account reconciliations
- Manage or oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
- Support invoice tracking, payment follow up, and cash flow visibility
- Ensure expenses, contractor payments, payroll related items, and client payments are properly tracked
- Assist with month end and year end preparation
- Identify and correct accounting gaps, inconsistencies, or process issues
- Help establish clean, practical accounting workflows as the company grows
Tax Filing and Compliance
- Prepare and file required corporate tax, GST, and other applicable filings
- Ensure Novus remains compliant with relevant CRA requirements
- Support payroll, contractor documentation, and other compliance related needs
- Maintain organized documentation for invoices, expenses, contracts, grants, funding programs, and tax records
- Advise leadership on filing deadlines, tax planning considerations, and compliance obligations
- Ensure records are accurate, complete, and ready for review or audit if required
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly or quarterly financial reports for leadership
- Provide profit and loss reporting, balance sheet review, and cash flow summaries
- Help leadership understand revenue, expenses, margins, and overall company performance
- Track project profitability where possible, including revenue, labour costs, contractor costs, and delivery margins
- Identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities
- Create useful dashboards or reporting templates that leadership can rely on
- Help ensure reporting is consistent, accurate, and easy to understand
Cash Flow and Forecasting
- Build and maintain cash flow forecasts relevant tools
- Help anticipate upcoming expenses, revenue timing, and working capital needs
- Provide guidance on payment timing, reserves, and cash management
- Support planning around contractor costs, hiring decisions, sales pipeline, and recurring expenses
- Help leadership evaluate the financial impact of growth decisions
- Provide early visibility into potential cash flow risks or opportunities
Budgeting and Financial Planning
- Assist in creating annual and quarterly budgets
- Support planning for operating expenses, contractor needs, hiring, software tools, sales activity, marketing spend, and other business costs
- Compare actual performance against budget and explain variances
- Help leadership set financial targets and track progress
- Provide guidance on pricing, margins, profitability, and financial sustainability
- Support planning around future growth, staffing, and operational investment
Strategic Financial Guidance
- Act as a financial advisor to the leadership team
- Help Novus make informed decisions around growth, hiring, contractor usage, pricing, cash reserves, and profitability
- Provide practical recommendations based on the company’s financial position
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and operational efficiency
- Help establish better financial controls, approval workflows, and reporting habits
- Support conversations with partners, advisors, lenders, funding programs, or other stakeholders as needed
- Help leadership understand the financial implications of major business decisions
Qualifications
- CPA designation required
- Proven experience in accounting, tax filing, bookkeeping oversight, controllership, fractional CFO services, or financial leadership
- Experience preparing and filing corporate tax, GST, and other business related filings
- Experience with QuickBooks is required
- Experience with Float, Wise, or similar cash flow and payment tools is considered an asset
- Experience supporting small to mid sized businesses, preferably in professional services, software, technology, consulting, or project based environments
- Strong understanding of financial reporting, cash flow, budgeting, forecasting, tax compliance, and business profitability
- Comfortable working with founders, directors, and small leadership teams
- Ability to explain financial information clearly to non financial stakeholders
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of organization
- Ability to work independently and proactively identify areas that need attention
Pay: $30.00-$140.00 per hour
