Reporting directly to the CFO and as a member of senior management, this position provides leadership and input to strategy, and organizational direction. This role requires a broad scope of accounting/finance experience including, but not limited to, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), with particular emphasis on financial instrument and loan loss accounting, and knowledge of the Treasury function including swap, derivative and hedge accounting. This position is also responsible for the company’s tax effectiveness and ensuring compliance with the Income Tax and Excise Act. Further, the VP Finance also oversees the Real Estate portfolio by working closely with Retail Operations.

Key responsibilities of this role are:
Oversees all aspects of accounting operations; general ledger transactions, receivables, payables, payroll and financial reporting
Leads the preparation and completion of the annual budget, including assembling all lines of business and departmental budgets and the production of the budget package for the Board of Directors.
Liaises regularly with external auditors and regulators to provide information and access to general ledger and other accounting records as required.
Coordinates all Head Office accounting including balancing general ledgers, expense and budget allocation; corresponding with department, executive and senior managers where necessary.
Oversees the accounting for and reporting of subsidiaries including BlueShore Leasing, BlueShore Transport, BlueShore Strata Financing, Morningside Properties, BlueShore Wealth and in-house Corporate Legal Counsel.
Provides leadership and direction in the management and implementation of accounting practices and procedures to support company policies and compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards.
Controls expenditures of requisitioning departments to ensure conformance with budgetary limitations.
Keeps abreast of implications to BlueShore Financial regarding new regulation and legislation as well as current economic and business news.
Coordinates and ensures that all regulatory requirements are fulfilled in a timely and satisfactory manner with respect to financial and informational requirements. This includes monthly and ad-hoc requirements, as well as the supervisory review.
Develops a good working relationship with the regulator (BCFSA) and participates in quarterly review meetings with BCFSA staff.
Collaborates with other Finance professionals within the Credit Union system (Peer Group 5) and when necessary to work together on common interests
A voting-member of the Asset-Liability Committee (ALCO), Management Risk Committee (MRC) and Management Credit Committee (MCC)
Challenges the norm choosing to look at what is right for BlueShore Financial at the time as opposed to what has been right in the past.
Ensures that the company is in compliance with the Income Tax and Excise Act.
Works with HR on accounting matters related to the pension plans including the Supplemental Executive Retirement Plan (SERP).
Other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.
Responsible for the production of the annual audited financial statements.
Analyses company’s financial results with respect to profits, trends, costs and compliance with budgets. Issues regular status and ad hoc reports to management.
Produces financial results and related reports, analyzing performance against historical results to identify and establish trends for the credit union.
Oversees the production of the financial projections for the Strategic Plan, including preparation of presentation material for the annual Board/Executive management offsite strategy session.
Develops analysis and responses to queries made by the regulator BCFSA.
Assists the Chief Financial Officer in developing and presenting material for the Audit Committee and Board of Directors.
Works with Treasury in coordinating meeting documents for the monthly ALCO and performs signing back-up in the VP Treasurer’s absence.
Financial Management – Real Estate
Oversees BlueShore Financial’s real estate portfolio ($70MM)
Negotiates new real estate leases as Landlord and Tenant and ensures lease terms are congruent with BlueShore’s retail branch strategy.
Responsible for the sale of redundant real estate assets
Manages employees directly including: recruitment and selection, training, coaching, learning and development, career development and planning, establishing performance goals, assessing performance, and determining and managing overall salary budget.
Proactively coaches (through group and one-on-one sessions) and develops employees to assist them in achieving career success and growth. Provides development opportunities for staff through various sources including learning sessions, internal and external training, and education courses. Ensures each employee has a learning plan in place and results are achieved.
Qualifications and Experience
Accounting Designation (CPA/CA preferred)
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business at a minimum; prefer a Master’s degree
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Minimum 10 years directly related experience
8 to 10 years management experience
Knowledge of credit union products, services and operations is preferred
Credit Union experience would be preferable
