We are looking for a highly motivated Aprentice Mechanic - 1st and 2nd Year to join our team. The Apprentice Mechanic supports the safe and reliable operation of company equipment while developing the technical skills and practical experience required to achieve Journeyperson certification. The role provides hands-on exposure to preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and fleet support activities.
Reporting to the Shop Lead Hand, the Apprentice Mechanic assists in the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, highway maintenance equipment, snow and ice control equipment, light-duty vehicles, and related assets. The position works under the guidance and mentorship of certified Journeyperson Mechanics while progressing through the Heavy Equipment Technician or Heavy-Duty Mechanic apprenticeship program.
What is the role?
Operations:
Fleet Maintenance & Repair
- Assist Journeyperson Mechanics with preventative maintenance inspections and repairs.
- Perform routine servicing of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, light-duty vehicles, and highway maintenance equipment.
- Assist with mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and electronic system repairs.
- Assist with engine, transmission, steering, suspension, brake, and driveline repairs
- Participate in equipment inspections and condition assessments.
- Assist with seasonal preparation and maintenance of snow and ice control equipment.
- Support emergency repairs and operational response activities when required.
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
- Learn and assist with diagnostic procedures on mechanical and electronic systems.
- Utilize manufacturer service information, manuals, and diagnostic equipment.
- Assist with troubleshooting hydraulic, electrical, and emissions-related issues.
- Support the use of telematics and fleet management systems when diagnosing equipment concerns.
Inspections & Compliance
- Assist with Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) inspections.
- Perform pre-service and post-repair inspections.
- Ensure equipment repairs meet company and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with documenting deficiencies and corrective actions.
Documentation & Administration
- Complete work orders accurately and in a timely manner.
- Record labour, parts, and maintenance activities in company systems.
- Maintain inspection documentation and service records.
- Assist with inventory control and parts tracking.
Shop Operations
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
- Wash, grease, and prepare equipment as required.
- Pick up, receive, and stock parts and materials.
- Assist with shop housekeeping and tool organization.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the maintenance department.
Apprenticeship Development
- Actively participate in technical training and apprenticeship schooling.
- Demonstrate commitment to developing mechanical knowledge and skills.
- Seek opportunities to learn new repair and diagnostic procedures.
- Work toward successful completion of apprenticeship requirements and Journeyperson certification.
Health and Safety:
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training programs.
- Complete hazard assessments when required.
- Report incidents, hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately.
- Follow lockout/tagout procedures and safe equipment servicing practices.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area.
- Comply with environmental policies and spill prevention procedures.
- Promote a culture of safety and accountability throughout the workplace.
What do we value?
- Registered Apprentice in the Heavy Equipment Technician or Heavy Duty Mechanic trade, or willingness to enroll in an apprenticeship program.
- Mechanical aptitude and interest in heavy equipment maintenance.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence with an acceptable driving record.
