- High school diploma
- Post-secondary coursework in recreation, recreation administration or therapeutic recreation therapy preferred; a diploma is required for South Ridge Village
- Class IV drivers’ license required for sites with a bus
- First Aide certificate required
- Food Safe certificate preferred
- Two years’ experience in event and activity planning with a focus on physical and occupation therapy, preferably in the health and/or nonprofit sector
- Two years’ experience managing volunteers
- Experience working with the elderly preferred
- Experience leading individual and group activities preferred
- Broad knowledge of recreation that promotes participation and social well-being
- Knowledge of community services and agencies
- Understanding and knowledge of geriatric issues and disease processes
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative
- General computer knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets to prepare promotional items and manage event and activity budget
- Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to deal effectively with conflict in a diplomatic and professional manner
- Adept at written and oral communication with internal and external customers
- Exhibit an open and sincere approach by demonstrating respect and compassion for everyone equally
- Maintain an individual’s dignity and self worth during conversations
- Excellent active listening skills
- Demonstrate flexibility by changing routine to accommodate client/resident needs
- Accept, implement and evaluate change with a positive attitude
- Coordination of recreational activities that support the physical and mental needs of residents: developing, adapting, delivering and supervising recreational activities both within the facility and in the greater community; arranging for and supporting external group participation in activities; managing the monthly recreation budget; developing and distributing the monthly activities calendar.
- Coordination of the volunteer program: assisting Chaplain with recruiting, screening and placing volunteers; training, orientating, evaluating, disciplining and dismissing volunteers; coordinating and participating in volunteer events; coaching and directing support staff who are responsible for volunteers; planning and implementing volunteer recognition events.
- Reporting duties such as: completing and charting resident activity; completing and charting new admission history information; tracking all data necessary for reports on facility events, activities and volunteer recruitment stats.
- Scheduling and chairing of resident/family council meetings; typing and distributing meeting minutes.
- Working collaboratively with other departments to organize and promote activities, communicate changes to programs and solicit feedback and support fund development activities and processes.
- Transportation of residents to external locations for activities as required.
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, keeping the work environment consistently tidy
- Adhere to all infection control practices and procedures
- Pursue continual learning by participating in educational opportunities, in-services and/or training programs
- Ensure an environment and resources which nurture spirituality
- Maintain confidentiality on issues related to residents, employee matters and GSS information
- Commit to supporting the Mission, Vision and Values of GSS
Requirements:
- A current and clear Criminal Records Check Form and if applicable a Vulnerable Sector Check that has been obtained no more than 90 calendar days prior to the hire date.
- A tuberculosis screening that has been completed no more than 12 months prior to the hire date.
