About BarChef
BarChef is an award-winning cocktail bar focused on creating immersive, multi-sensory experiences through the intersection of culinary technique and modern cocktail culture.
We are currently looking for an experienced and motivated Sous Chef to join our culinary team. This position is ideal for someone with strong kitchen fundamentals, leadership experience, attention to detail, and an interest in learning modernist culinary techniques.
The Role
The Sous Chef will work closely with the culinary leadership team to oversee daily kitchen operations, execute food and Modernist cocktail programs, maintain quality standards, train team members, and ensure smooth service.
This is a hands-on leadership position. The successful candidate must be comfortable working a station, leading service, managing prep, and taking responsibility for the kitchen when senior culinary leadership is not present.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise kitchen service and daily operations
- Execute and maintain BarChef's food and Modernist cocktail standards
- Work actively on a station during service
- Manage daily prep and ensure the kitchen is fully prepared for service
- Train, coach, and develop cooks
- Maintain consistency in recipes, presentation, portioning, and execution
- Assist with ordering, inventory, waste control, and food cost management
- Support event preparation and execution
- Maintain food safety, sanitation, organization, and storage standards
- Complete opening and closing responsibilities
- Assist with menu development, tastings, and R&D
- Identify operational issues and communicate effectively with culinary leadership
- Take ownership of the kitchen and team when required
What We're Looking For
- Minimum 2–3 years of professional kitchen experience
- Previous experience as a Sous Chef, Junior Sous Chef, Kitchen Supervisor, or similar leadership position
- Strong culinary fundamentals and knife skills
- Ability to confidently run a service and manage a small team
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- High attention to detail and consistency
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-standard environment
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Understanding of food safety and proper kitchen procedures
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and late-night shifts
- Interest in modernist cuisine and progressive culinary techniques
Experience with modernist techniques is an asset but not required. Training will be provided; however, candidates must demonstrate curiosity, precision, and a willingness to learn.
The Ideal Candidate
We're looking for someone who is hands-on, reliable, organized, and accountable. You should be comfortable taking direction while also having the confidence to make decisions and lead the team independently when required.
This role requires someone who understands that leadership in the kitchen means being present during service, supporting the team, maintaining standards, and addressing problems before they affect the guest experience.
What You'll Learn
BarChef provides an opportunity to work with techniques and ingredients that are uncommon in traditional restaurant kitchens, including components of our Modernist cocktail program and multi-sensory presentations.
The position also offers exposure to menu development, events, culinary R&D, and the operational side of a globally recognized cocktail program.
