Are you a compassionate and experienced Occupational Therapist with a passion for making a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals facing homelessness and poverty? The Mustard Seed is seeking a caring and dedicated Occupational Therapist to join our dynamic team.
This is a pioneering role within a new recovery transitional housing program. Reporting to the Recovery Supervisor, the Occupational Therapist will be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting a sober‑based recovery model with rolling intakes. The program focuses on skill‑building, trauma understanding, social connection, and relapse‑prevention, alongside transitional housing supports that build recovery capital in areas such as independent living, financial literacy, employment, and connection to long‑term community supports.
As one of the first to shape this role, the Occupational Therapist will help establish practices and processes while supporting individuals experiencing homelessness or poverty through functional assessments and strategies that promote sustainable living. Collaboration with Resident Engagement, Property Management, and other internal teams is essential to improving residents’ quality of life and supporting long‑term housing stability.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assess and intervene to support a person’s cognitive, perceptual, motor, and psychosocial functioning;
- Provide clinical standardized and non-standardized assessments and resulting reports to referral sources;
- Deliver rehabilitation programs within the Mustard Seed community, as needed;
- Assist people with chronic diseases to self-manage their challenges;
- Assess clients' needs for adaptive equipment and provide recommendations for their use;
- Liaise with internal and external resources, including the maintenance of existing partnerships as well as development of new ones;
- Stay updated on the latest research and best practices in occupational therapy and contribute to the development of innovative therapy techniques or programs;
- Teach clinical students during their practicum rotations;
- Advocate for client as needed both to access resources within and outside the organization;
- Continue to update resources for staff, clients and future students;
- Provide clinical recommendations and input to FASD diagnosis clinic;
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, and social workers, to provide comprehensive care for clients;
- Lead the expansion and development of the occupational therapy program within the Wellness Centre and establish standardized frameworks to support implementation across Mustard Seed Wellness Centres in Alberta;
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards;
- Provide input into program evaluation upon request.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- MSc Occupational Therapy is an asset with at least 1-year experience;
- Registered with Alberta College of Occupational Therapist;
- First Aid Certificate;
- Use of various functional assessment tools;
- Knowledge in MS Word;
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License (Class 5), and a clean driver’s abstract.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Time in excess of regular working hours may be required on occasion.
- Fluctuations in hours may apply due to programs operating outside of regular working hours.
- Local travel to various Mustard Seed sites, client residencies, and external agencies will be required.
- Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times, which could result in them uttering threats, discriminatory statements, and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice, or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
- Training on how to respond is provided, but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
