Full job description

Job Summary
The Afternoon Shift Production Supervisor is responsible for leading shop operations during the afternoon shift, ensuring production targets, quality standards, and safety requirements are consistently met. This is a hands-on leadership role, where the Supervisor will work as either an Assembler or Welder/Fitter while overseeing team performance, workflow, and output.

The successful candidate will initially train on the day shift to gain a full understanding of operations before transitioning to independently manage the afternoon shift.

Schedule

Monday to Thursday: 4:30 PM to 3:00 AM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break
Total of 40 hours per week
Overtime may be required based on production needs

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

Supervise and lead the afternoon shift production team (assembly and welding).
Act as the primary point of contact for all production activities during the shift.
Assign work, monitor productivity, and ensure efficient workflow across both assembly and welding functions.
Train, coach, and mentor employees across assembly and welding roles.
Support onboarding and skills development of new hires.
Foster a positive, accountable, and team-oriented work environment.

Production (Assembly or Welding/Fitting)

Perform hands-on work in either assembly or welding/fitting, depending on expertise.
Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions.
Ensure proper fabrication, fitting, and/or assembly of components to required specifications.
Operate fabrication and assembly tools including welders, plasma cutters, press brakes, drills, grinders, and other equipment as required.
Ensure completed work meets quality standards before release.

Shift Coordination & Communication

Coordinate with day shift to ensure effective handover of work, priorities, and issues.
Communicate production status, delays, and challenges to the Operations Manager.
Ensure jobs are properly staged, labeled, and ready for the next phase.
Identify and address bottlenecks across welding and assembly processes.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

Enforce quality control standards across assembly and welding operations.
Conduct inspections to ensure adherence to specifications and tolerances.
Identify defects, inefficiencies, and improvement opportunities.
Support Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
Ensure compliance with ISO standards and company quality systems where applicable.

General Shop Duties

Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and material-handling equipment.
Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area.
Perform basic maintenance on tools and equipment.

Safety

Ensure all employees follow safety policies and procedures.
Enforce proper use of PPE at all times.
Promote a strong safety culture and lead by example.
Report hazards, incidents, and near misses.
Ensure compliance with OHSA and company safety requirements.

Qualifications

5+ years of experience in metal fabrication, welding, or mechanical assembly.
Background as either a Welder/Fitter or Assembler in a manufacturing environment.
Previous leadership, lead hand, or supervisory experience preferred.
Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
Proficiency with fabrication tools, welding equipment, and/or assembly tools.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
Knowledge of quality systems and ISO standards is an asset.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical work.
Forklift and overhead crane experience (or willingness to be certified).

Additional Notes

This position will begin with a structured onboarding and training period on the day shift to ensure a full understanding of both assembly and welding workflows.
The successful candidate will transition to the afternoon shift once fully trained and confident in independently leading operations.
Must be available to work the afternoon shift schedule (Monday–Thursday, 4:30 PM – 3:00 AM) on an ongoing basis following completion of training.
This is a working supervisory role, requiring the individual to remain hands-on in either assembly or welding while leading the team.
Candidates from either an assembly or welding/fitting background are encouraged to apply, with no preference given to either discipline.
The role is critical to supporting the company’s transition to multi-shift operations, with a focus on establishing consistency, accountability, and strong communication between shifts.
The Supervisor will play a key role in bridging day and afternoon shift operations, ensuring continuity, productivity, and quality standards are maintained.

Work Environment

Industrial shop environment with moderate to high noise levels.
Exposure to hot surfaces, sharp edges, sparks, and metal debris.
Standing, bending, and lifting required throughout the shift.

Pay: $30.00-$35.00 per hour
