Duties
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Communications Technology Program (ComTech) in Alberta is seeking talented candidates with a proven ability to support a wide range of information technology (IT) and electronics and communications infrastructure and equipment.
The units within ComTech provide life-cycle management and field support for Alberta First Responders Radio Communication System user equipment, support for vehicular-based equipment such as mobile work stations, in-car video systems and cellular phones and data modems, technical support for two operational communication (9-1-1) centers and their municipal counterparts, and operational support for the Critical Incident Program.
These positions are situated in a law enforcement environment, which includes regular contact with uniformed and armed police officers.

Enhanced Reliability Status with Top Secret security clearance
Willing and able to travel throughout service area (i.e., Alberta), including to remote areas, overnight, and travel via helicopter or fixed wing aircraft
Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
Willing and able to work overtime, be on standby, or adjust schedule with little or no notice to meet operational requirements
Willing and able to perform work duties in inclement and uncomfortable weather conditions
Willing and able to provide technical support to frontline policing operations in the field
Willing and able to crawl and work in small areas to install equipment
Willing and able to lift heavy or awkward items, weighing up to twenty-three (23) kilograms
Willing and able to work at heights

Willing and able to obtain and maintain a valid Class 5 driver’s license

Graduation from a two-year program of study from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed
Notes:
1. Indeterminate incumbents in the IT group on December 9, 2021 who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the IT group.
2. Indeterminate incumbents of positions in the CS group on May 10, 1999, who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the IT group.
3. At the manager’s discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative to the minimum education stated above. Whenever the minimum education is met using this alternative, it is met for the specific position only and must be re-assessed for other positions for which this alternative has been specified by the manager.

Experience with information technology (IT) and electronics or communications infrastructure solutions in a technical capacity
Experience preparing technical documentation to support IT and electronics infrastructure solutions and services, such as architecture/design diagrams, dataflow diagrams, procedures, use cases, user requirements, or detailed build documents
Experience working with IT and electronic test tools (e.g., WireShark, multimeters, spectrum/radio-frequency analyzers, communication protocol analyzers, power meters, oscilloscopes or signal generators) to test, analyze, diagnose or repair electronics equipment
Experience analyzing, designing, modifying, or troubleshooting electronic circuitry
Experience with wireless communications systems and equipment (e.g., Wi-Fi, cellular technologies, P25 land mobile radio)
Applied / assessed at a later date
Knowledge of fundamental theory and practical application of the IT infrastructure discipline
Knowledge of fundamental theory and practical application of the electronics discipline

Successful completion of a diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution specializing in IP network design, configuration and maintenance

Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Foundations (or higher) certification
Network+, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), and/or Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification
Certification as a technology professional with one or more of the following or equivalent designations by a provincial professional organization recognized by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board (CTAB): Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Applied Science Technologist (AScT), and/or Professional Technologist (PTech)
Experience supporting telephony and IT infrastructure in a 9-1-1 call center environment
Experience managing incidents using a service management ticketing system
