Raise is currently hiring a Mechanical Engineer – E4 (Hydroelectric Generation) on behalf of our client. This is an exciting opportunity to support critical hydroelectric generation projects, operations, maintenance programs, and Owner’s Engineer reviews while working alongside one of British Columbia’s leading utility organizations.
Note: The primary pay rate is based on the rate for an incorporated contractor who owns their own business. However, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in a T4 arrangement, where applicable.
Description
The E4 Mechanical Engineer is a professional engineer who applies advanced engineering knowledge and judgment to provide engineering, estimating, planning, drafting, and quality management services for medium-complexity capital projects and operational programs. The successful candidate will support hydroelectric generation facilities and related mechanical systems while ensuring work is delivered safely, with quality, on schedule, and within budget.
This position has been created to support an increasing mechanical engineering workload across capital projects, Operations, Maintenance and Asset (OMA) programs, and Owner’s Engineer review activities.
Mechanical Engineering Focus Areas
Generation Mechanical Systems include, but are not limited to:

Hydraulic turbines (Francis, Pelton, and Kaplan)

Intake, draft tube, and maintenance gates

Penstock inlet valves

Turbine inlet valves

Associated station mechanical systems and infrastructure
Responsibilities:
-
Develop safe and effective engineering solutions through design, analysis, troubleshooting, and interpretation of engineering specifications for hydroelectric generation projects and operations.

Support project and operational teams in achieving safety, cost, schedule, and quality objectives through engineering planning, cost estimating, progress monitoring, and contractor coordination.

Conduct independent technical studies and analyses to resolve complex mechanical engineering challenges and recommend practical, safe, and reliable solutions.

Provide engineering expertise and technical guidance to project teams, operations personnel, contractors, and stakeholders.

Participate in the development and enhancement of engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.

Support Owner’s Engineer review activities and technical assessments for generation-related projects.

Review contractor deliverables, engineering designs, calculations, and technical documentation.

Prepare engineering reports, technical evaluations, design recommendations, and progress updates.

Travel to generation facilities throughout British Columbia as required.
Additional Responsibilities

Support the creation and revision of engineering drawings associated with station mechanical systems.

Utilize Autodesk and other CADD applications to prepare and revise engineering drawings and models.

Develop customized drawings for non-standard engineering projects and installations.

Manage drawings using computerized records management systems.

Perform engineering calculations and support design verification activities.
-
Ensure all drafting and design work complies with BC Hydro CADD standards.

Support facility construction, equipment installation, and infrastructure upgrades through detailed engineering drawings and layouts.

Safe, reliable, and cost-effective engineering solutions supporting project and operational objectives.
Education and Skills:
-
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC, or eligible for registration.

Minimum 8 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience.

Strong expertise in hydroelectric generation systems, including turbines, generators, governor systems, gates, and valves.

Experience supporting medium to large-scale engineering projects involving multiple stakeholders.
-
Familiarity with CAD systems, drafting standards, and engineering drawing development.

Experience using industry-standard engineering design and analysis software.
-
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Strong written and verbal communication skills in a professional environment.
-
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing.

Willingness to travel to sites across British Columbia as required.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
-
Utility industry experience.
-
Experience working with organizations similar in size and complexity to BC Hydro.

Experience performing computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) within utility, industrial, or power generation environments.
-
Successful completion of, or progress toward, the BC Hydro Electrical System introductory course.
-
PMP certification.
-
Experience supporting Owner’s Engineer reviews and capital project delivery.

Familiarity with Notarius digital seal technology.
