Grain Elevator Operator

Job Summary
The Grain Elevator Operator supports the daily operations of the grain handling facility. This role involves receiving, storing, conditioning, and shipping grain while ensuring the safe and efficient operation of grain handling equipment.
The operator monitors grain flow and storage conditions, assists with preventative maintenance, and helps maintain a safe and organized facility. This position requires mechanical awareness, attention to safety, and the ability to work in a physically demanding agricultural environment.
Key Responsibilities
Grain Handling Operations
- Receive grain deliveries and load trucks for shipment.
- Operate the grain handling system (GHS) to transfer grain between bins and storage areas.
- Take samples of incoming and outgoing grain shipments.
- Assist with grain grading, blending, drying, aeration, and storage management.
- Monitor grain flow through conveyors, elevators, and bins.
- Monitor bin fans and grain quality to maintain proper storage conditions.
- Fill overhead storage bins as required.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operate grain handling equipment including conveyors, augers, dryers, loaders, and elevators.
- Adjust system controls, valves, and equipment settings to regulate grain movement.
- Assist with preventative maintenance, inspections, and system testing.
- Perform minor repairs and report equipment malfunctions.
- Support maintenance of mechanical systems including conveyors, augers, and dryers.
Facility Maintenance
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including cleanup of spilled grain.
- Assist with general grounds maintenance around the facility.
- Clean and maintain equipment, workstations, and storage areas.
- Assist with sealing water leaks and maintaining facility integrity.
- Support fumigation and sanitation of grain storage areas when required.
Safety and Operations Support
- Follow safety procedures and maintain safe work practices.
- Wear required personal protective equipment when required (PPE).
- Monitor equipment indicators, gauges, and control systems to detect operational issues.
- Weigh and verify grain tonnage using scales and monitoring equipment.
- Assist with documentation, system procedures, and operational reporting for the Elevator Manager.
- Provide courteous service to producers, drivers, and customers.
Qualifications
Preferred Experience
- Experience in agriculture, grain handling, or grain elevator operations preferred.
- Familiarity with grain handling systems and equipment.
Skills and Knowledge
- Basic knowledge of grain handling equipment (conveyors, augers, dryers, elevators).
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to identify equipment issues.
- Strong attention to detail and safety awareness.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Clear communication with coworkers and supervisors.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position involves physically demanding work that may include:
- Working in confined spaces and elevated areas
- Climbing ladders and working at heights
- Riding belt man lifts and accessing elevated equipment
- Walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, pushing, and pulling tools or equipment
- Frequently lifting up to 50 pounds
- Working outdoors and in varying weather conditions
Employees must also be able to:
- Read and follow written and verbal safety instructions
- Identify colors when grading grain
- Detect odors and safety warning signals
- Maintain vision sufficient for safe equipment operation
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $24.00-$28.00 per hour
