About TMSI Ltd TMSI is a full‑service intermodal transportation company providing direct service to Argentia, Newfoundland via the Port of Halifax, operating modern container equipment across marine, road and rail channels. You’ll maintain equipment that keeps freight moving safely and on time.
About the Role As a Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, you will inspect, diagnose, repair and verify complex faults on heavy mobile and stationary equipment typical of port and intermodal operations, including container handlers, cranes, terminal tractors/yard trucks, forklifts, gensets, and truck/chassis systems. Work spans hydraulic, electrical/electronic, powertrain, braking and steering systems, plus scheduled preventive maintenance and documentation. (Duties align with the Red Seal Occupational Standard.)
What You’ll Do
- Perform advanced diagnostics and repairs on diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions, electrical/ECM and CAN bus systems.
- Complete preventive maintenance programs and statutory inspections; maintain accurate service records.
- Support safe operations in an active terminal environment; collaborate with operations to minimize downtime.
- Maintain and repair port equipment including cranes, container handlers, and reach stackers, as well as truck and chassis systems.
- Participate in after‑hours/on‑call rotation as required.
What You Bring Must‑Haves
- Red Seal Endorsement (RSE) as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (or eligible to obtain via interprovincial transfer/trade qualification).
- Solid experience troubleshooting hydraulics, electronics and powertrains on heavy equipment.
- Competency in maintaining and repairing port equipment (e.g., cranes, container handlers) and truck/chassis systems.
- Valid driver’s licence and the ability to work safely around heavy mobile equipment.
- Strong commitment to safe work practices and accurate documentation.
Nice‑to‑Haves
- Experience with port/intermodal equipment (container handlers/reach stackers, terminal tractors).
- OEM diagnostic software literacy; basic welding/fabrication.
- WHMIS/First Aid or other safety tickets.
Schedule & Work Environment Primarily day/evening shifts with occasional weekends/on‑call to support vessel/rail schedules. On‑site role at our Argentia terminal with frequent outdoor work in all seasons.
