EIPS is recruiting a permanent full-time Journeyman Electrician with our Facility Services department. EIPS may also consider Apprentice Electricians who have obtained at least their 3rd year designation. Apprentice wages would be scaled accordingly.
Facility Services is located at the EIPS Central Administration building in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the division, Central administration is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students, and Information Technologies. Central Services is staffed by 190 employees.

JOB SUMMARY
The Electrician is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electrical systems at Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS). This includes completing electrical installations, repairs, and regular maintenance that comply with municipal building codes. The role helps to ensure a reliable electrical infrastructure that supports the efficient operations and functions of the school, ensuring a safe and conducive environment for students, staff, and visitors. The position works across multiple schools within the Division, ensuring that daily tasks are efficiently organized and completed. Additionally, the Electrician will collaborate with other trades to minimize disruptions and maintain smooth operations within the schools. The position supports a collaborative, respectful, and efficient work environment that contributes to the department’s overall success.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Installation, Repair and Compliance

Perform electrical installations, maintenance, and repairs in division buildings, ensuring proper functioning of electrical systems and compliance with municipal codes and regulations.

Adhere to safety regulations and standards while carrying out electrical tasks, ensuring a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Identify and resolve electrical issues through effective troubleshooting techniques, ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations.

Upgrade, maintain, and modify electrical systems to meet evolving needs and ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency.

Replace outdated wiring, upgrade electrical panels, and install new equipment as required.
Inspections and Maintenance

Perform routine inspections of electrical systems to identify deficiencies or potential hazards.

Conduct preventive maintenance on electrical systems to prevent problems.

Respond to service requests and diagnose electrical issues reported by school and facility staff.

Complete electrical work related to renovations, upgrades, and new construction projects.
Communication
-
Communicate effectively with school administrators regarding electrical projects and timelines.

Collaborate with maintenance and department staff on electrical-related tasks and projects as needed.

Respond promptly to emergency electrical situations, such as power outages, and be available to address urgent electrical issues outside regular hours.

Collaborate and coordinate schedules and work efforts with contractors involved in electrical installations or repairs.

Maintain accurate records and documentation related to work order tracking of maintenance, repairs, inspections, timekeeping, and material ordering.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Minimum Required:
-
High school diploma or equivalent
-
Journeyperson ticket/certification in electrical.
Preferred:
-
Red Seal Endorsement in Electrical.
Experience:
Minimum Required:
- 3-5 years of related experience.
Preferred:
- 2 years of experience in a Journeyperson role.

1 year of supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of electrical operations, systems, and repairs of commercial systems.

Working knowledge of building codes, fire and safety codes, regulations, and occupational hazards.

Knowledge of fire alarm systems, commercial-grade electrical systems.
-
Skilled in electrical maintenance and troubleshooting on commercial systems.

Familiarity with HVAC systems and understanding of occupational health and safety (OH&S) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) regulations.

Attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality work.

Strong written and speaking English communication skills including interpersonal skills.

Ability to effectively work in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications, Certifications and Designations

Valid Alberta Driver’s License in good standing as per the requirements of the Elk Island Public Schools Vehicle and Equipment Operating Manual.
