Bio-medical Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Healthy City Lab in the Schulich School of Engineering studies mobility, function, and cognitive aging in older adults using digital sensing, wearable and in-vehicle technologies, and machine learning. Research involves older adults and individuals with cognitive impairment, and is conducted across multiple concurrent studies and partner sites.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator and Director of the Healthy City Lab. It coordinates the day-to-day execution of multiple research studies and provides functional guidance to research assistants, students, and trainees, without formal supervisory authority. Given the nature of research, there may be fluctuations in workload. For instance, there could be increased demands during participant recruitment, data collection periods, or when approaching deadlines for report submissions or presentations.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Research Program and Study Coordination
- Coordinates research studies on everyday driving, gait, and community mobility as digital markers of functional and cognitive change in aging, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and related conditions

Coordinates interdisciplinary research teams, collaborators, clinical partners, trainees, and project stakeholders across multiple sites

Develops and maintains study timelines, workplans, recruitment trackers, visit schedules, and close-out plans

Supports study start-up activities, including feasibility review, study file creation, site readiness, delegation documentation, onboarding, and study activation

Supports protocol development, review, and implementation to ensure study activities are clear, feasible, and aligned with participant safety and data integrity requirements
Ethics, Regulatory, and Institutional Approvals
- Prepares, submits, and maintains ethics applications, amendments, renewals, closures, reportable events, and related documentation

Obtains and maintains required institutional, departmental, and study approvals, and supports data-sharing and collaborator agreements across partner sites

Ensures study activities are conducted in accordance with approved protocols, REB approvals, consent documents, institutional requirements, and privacy/confidentiality obligations

Maintains compliance with TCPS2 and Good Clinical Practice standards, and supports data governance for wearable, GPS, in-vehicle, and other sensor-based data
Participant Recruitment, Consent, and Follow-Up

Coordinates participant recruitment, screening, eligibility review, enrollment, consent workflows, study visits, and follow-up

Communicates with older adults, individuals with cognitive impairment, caregivers, family members, clinical staff, and research participants in a clear, respectful, non-coercive, and culturally sensitive manner

Supports participant privacy, confidentiality, dignity, safety, and welfare throughout the study lifecycle

Coordinates study assessments, questionnaires, clinical and behavioural data collection, follow-up reminders, and device and sensor data collection as required by the protocol
Team Training, Mentorship, and Professional Development
- Acts as a resource for research assistants, students, trainees, and collaborators

Trains, mentors, and provides functional guidance to junior research staff and trainees in study procedures, documentation standards, participant communication, ethics compliance, and data quality expectations

Supports onboarding and training documentation for study team members, including TCPS2, GCP, protocol-specific, system-specific, and role-specific training

Pursues relevant professional development, continuing education, and self-directed learning to maintain and strengthen research knowledge and skills
Research Administration and Project Support
- Provides administrative support to the Principal Investigator for study planning, project coordination, documentation, scheduling, and research team communication

Supports accurate documentation, timely communication, and organized research files to enable continuity across projects
Qualifications / Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in engineering, neuroscience, kinesiology, psychology, public health, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.

Minimum 2 years of progressively responsible research experience required, ideally in clinical, community-based, or aging/cognitive health research; a combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

Current or recent TCPS2 (Course on Research Ethics) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training required, or completion within the first months of employment.

Strong knowledge of University of Calgary research policies and processes, including research ethics, IRISS, and research finance and approval pathways.

Strong knowledge of TCPS2, privacy and confidentiality obligations, informed consent, participant protection, and protocol compliance.

Demonstrated experience preparing and maintaining research ethics (REB) submissions, amendments, renewals, reportable events, and study close-out documentation.

Demonstrated experience coordinating participant recruitment, screening, consent, follow-up, study visits, data collection, and retention activities.

Experience developing study timelines, managing deadlines, monitoring deliverables, and supporting study close-out.

Demonstrated experience working with older adults, individuals with cognitive impairment, patients, or caregivers are strongly preferred.

Experience with digital health technologies (e.g., wearable sensors, mobile applications, GPS, or in-vehicle data-collection systems) is an asset.

Experience with REDCap, Qualtrics, Python, or similar research and data tools is an asset.

Experience training, mentoring, or supporting research assistants, students, trainees, or volunteers.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and prioritization skills.

Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining timely communication with the Principal Investigator and research team.
