Position Summary
Bycar Engineering is seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Designer to join our growing office located in Surrey, BC. In this position, the successful candidate will have a focus in fire protection design while still doing a significant amount of HVAC and plumbing design on a variety of projects from schematic phase through to construction. Although this position is geared towards candidates with fire protection experience, we strongly encourage all candidates with intermediate to senior level skills to apply as we are looking for multiple designers.
The ideal candidate will have 4+ years of fire protection design experience and a solid knowledgebase of HVAC and plumbing design. The candidate must also have strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills, and be able to work independently while under the guidance of senior designers.

Compensation Package
The expected salary for this role is between $75,000 to $100,000 annually. Base salaries are determined considering several factors such as skills and competencies, experience, education, and internal and external competitiveness.

Responsibilities and Duties
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Design of building mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection, using industry best-practices and compliance with building codes. Perform HVAC and plumbing design calculations and selection of mechanical equipment.
- Use AutoCAD and/or Revit to set up project drawings, cleanup backgrounds, transfer markups, and production of mechanical design drawings.
- Perform Contract Administration duties including shop drawing review, respond to requests for information (RFIs), and collection of closeout documentation.
- Attend design and construction meetings with the client, other consultants and the contractors.
- Attend construction field reviews to review contractor work.
- Increased leadership responsibilities, providing coaching and delegating some design tasks to various individuals depending upon the individual’s aptitude and experience.
- Maintain project schedules, track work progress, and identify and address the need for additional services and scope creep to project managers.
- Help establish and promote client relationships.
- Contribute to maintaining and the continual improvement of workflows and design standards.
Qualifications and Experience
- A university degree or college/technology diploma in mechanical engineering or systems is preferred, but not mandatory.
- 4+ years (including co-op terms) of mechanical design experience in the building industry.
- Experience working with customers and a client base.
- Exposure to analysis and troubleshooting of systems is an asset.
- Experience in construction field reviews and site surveys is an asset.
- Sustainable design certification (e.g. LEED) or experience is an asset.
Key Technical Skills
- Proficiency with Windows and Office programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
- Proficiency with one or more of the following: Revit, AutoCAD, AutoSprink, and HAP.
- Strong understanding of plumbing, HVAC, and fire protection system design.
- Up-to-date knowledge of technical developments, building codes, and industry-related standards is an asset.
- Able to read and interpret other discipline construction documents including Architectural, Structural, Electrical and Civil design drawings.

- Excellent time management and project management skills. Ability to multi-task and work on several projects at the same time. Acknowledges or responds to emails and phone calls in a timely manner.
