This is a permanent part-time position, working up to 28 hours/week (7 hours/week Respite Care program & 21 hours/week Loft Youth program). Flexible work hours may be required in order to meet the needs of the program, families and caregivers.
Shuswap Children’s Association, originally the Shuswap Exceptional Children’s Association, was founded in 1982 by a group of parents of children with support needs who found they were unable to access services for their children. They were joined by community professionals, service providers, and others who shared the goals of the parents.
As a leader within the organization and the community and under the direction of the policies and procedures outlined in the Shuswap Children’s program manuals and Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) service contracts, it is the responsibility of the Youth and Respite Care Program Supervisor to ensure the provision of services and support to children, youth, and their families. In collaboration with the Youth and Respite Care Program Coordinator, this position assists with the planning, development, and day-to-day operations of the Loft and Respite Care programs.
Loft Youth Program
· In collaboration with the Youth and Respite Care Program Coordinator and within the requirements of the MCFD contract:
o Plan and implement social and recreational activities that provide program participants with the opportunity to develop life skills, build social relationships, and optimize skills.
o Meet and work collaboratively with families to determine the needs of the child and the family.
o Develop and incorporate clear support goals for each program participant into both group and individual activities.
· Assist with the development and implementation of program activities designed to increase communication skills, social and interpersonal skills, life skills and safety training within the community and interpersonal relationships.
· Assist in the development of client support plans with other team members including the Youth and Respite Care Program Coordinator, the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) and Child and Youth with Support Needs (CYSN) Social Workers as required.
· Ensure youth’s goals are developed in cooperation with their families and that families are key participants in any decision making regarding their children.
· Ensure goals are practical and easy to incorporate into the youth’s daily life.
· Review support plans with families, youth and MCFD CYSN Social Workers at least semi-annually.
· Participate in team meetings regarding the Loft Youth program participants.
· During the program, facilitate and encourage participant engagement to ensure success in a program that provides a variety of social and recreational activities.
· Create a positive, safe environment and provide individual and group support during scheduled recreational activities.
· Employ preventative strategies and use a strength-based approach when interacting with youth.
· Actively engage with youth and role model positive behaviours when leading activities.
· Provide direct supervision and set healthy boundaries including physical, environmental, emotional, psychological and social to ensure participants’ safety.
· Use own vehicle to transport program participants as per SCA’s policies and procedures, mileage is reimbursed.
· Advocate for youth to ensure they obtain optimum services at school, in the community and as they transition to adulthood.
· Assist older youth with the transition activities and preparation for adulthood, which includes designing programs with a focus on being safe, problem solving, financial management, mental health, community inclusion and developing overall independent living skills.
· Assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the Loft Youth program.
· Support youth by developing and maintaining a positive relationship with youth & their families.
· Provide information on services and resources, including educational, health and social opportunities for youth as required.
· Keep up to date on community resources and services available to youth with developmental challenges and their families.
· Work in collaboration with the School District and other specialists, professionals, and consultants to support children and youth in the Shuswap region and beyond.
· Assist with the hiring, mentoring, training, and scheduling of program assistants, summer staff, volunteers, and practicum students to work with the Loft program participants.
Respite Care Program
· Assist with receiving and managing program referrals from MCFD and with completing intake meetings with families as required.
· In collaboration with the Youth and Respite Care Program Coordinator, and within the requirements of the MCFD contract, assist with managing the day-to-day operations of the Respite Care program.
· Connect with family’s other team members including Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) Child and Youth with Support Needs (CYSN) Social Workers and develop respite support plans that meet the needs of each family.
· Participate in team meetings regarding the Respite Care program participants.
· Assist with the hiring, mentoring, training, and scheduling of Respite Care providers to work with families enrolled in the Respite Care program.
· Advocate for families to ensure they obtain optimum respite supports and services for their children.
Community Responsibilities
· Support program connections within the community through field trips etc.
· Participate in relevant community programs, services, and initiatives.
· Utilize all available resources to assist families and children.
· Represent SCA in the community outside work hours as required.
· Keep up to date on resources and services available to children and youth with support needs and their families in the community and beyond.
Administration
· Assist with the maintenance of program and client records and statistics, including the inclusive reporting of daily and monthly notes, documents, updated family details, goals, all communications etc.
· Ensure all client files are up to date in Nucleus, including intakes, documents, notes, medication tab, POMS and closing forms
· Ensure that all appropriate documentation is accurate, complete and meets the reporting requirements of Shuswap Children’s Association.
· In collaboration with the Youth and Respite Care Program Coordinator and the Executive Director assist with developing programs and services to meet the needs of the changing community.
· Ensure confidentiality of all client information.
· In collaboration with the Youth and Family Support Program Coordinator and MCFD CYSN team members, other staff and service providers review client files and caseload as required.
· Ensure maintenance of program equipment and supplies, including maintenance of inventory.
· In collaboration with the Youth and Respite Care Program Coordinator and the Executive Director, assist with developing the annual budget, reviewing quarterly financial statements to ensure appropriate management of program budget, developing/adjusting programming to ensure programs are operating withing budget parameters, and establishing program goals for the upcoming operational year and beyond.
· Provide monthly program statistics to the Director of Operations.
· Act as the backup participant in Local Advisory Committee meetings and assist with case conferences as required.
· Implement the policies and procedures of the Loft Youth program and the Respite Care program in accordance with the philosophy and policies of the Shuswap Children’s Association and where applicable within the context of MCFD service contracts.
· Attend job related meetings, including Shuswap Children’s Association Staff meetings.
· Maintain a professional and creative attitude through job-related training as required.
· Relevant education and/or experience working with children and youth with support needs.
· Relevant education and/or experience working with families and children.
· Education and/or experience in providing staff supervision, training, and support.
· Education and/or experience in child and youth mental health is considered an asset.
· Education and/or experience in assisting youth with the transition to adulthood.
· Non-violence crisis intervention or Mandt Training.
· Experience working with client databases is considered an asset.
· Experience with analyzing data and trends is considered an asset.
· Experience in program management is considered an asset.
· Experience in planning and delivering staff and community training is considered an asset.
· Knowledge of and commitment to the principles and practices of family centered care.
