Position Summary
The Supervising Archaeologist supports permit holders and Field Directors by leading crews in the field, completing pedestrian traverses and conducting subsurface testing as necessary, while taking effective notes and recording all project areas. The successful candidate must be able to travel/work on-site in British Columbia and or Alberta in season and have excellent knowledge of the relevant Heritage legislation and can provide leadership in the field.

Key Responsibilities

Leading and conducting fieldwork includes travel, hiking and subsurface testing.
Report writing, data management, cataloguing and analysis 20% of the time.
Data management (includes paperwork/notes) 5% of the time.
Leading by example (fieldwork, problem solving, logistics) 20% of the time.
Equipment maintenance 5%.
Conduct work activities in accordance with sound health and safety practices set out by the Company safety program and applicable legislation and promote these practices with co-workers.

Key Performance Indicators

Completing fieldwork with minimal safety incidents.
Completing fieldwork with no further concerns for archaeology.
Completion of interim reports with minimal edits/versions.
Clear site sketch maps (minimal back and forth with GIS Specialist + PM).
Following company policy and procedures and all relevant Heritage and safety regulations.
Strong leadership by example as evidenced by high fives!

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology (or degree in progress)
1-2+ years experience in BC or Alberta archaeology
Prior related experience identifying areas of potential and identifying sites
Class 5 Drivers License
Intermediate First Aid
Ability to travel to various project locations for extended periods
Ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions and in diverse or rugged terrain
Ability to perform manual labour, including hiking for extended distances (average 8 to 10 km per day), and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs
Self-motivated with strong initiative
Ability to work cooperatively, support and coach co-workers in a positive team environment and share work expertise and knowledge
Strong oral and written communicator
Strong leadership skills
Prior related experience with Argos/ATVs/UTVs/Sled,H2S Alive, Bear Aware, WHMIS
Prior related experience making management recommendations for high potential areas and previously recorded or unrecorded archaeological sites
Prior related experience with ArcGIS or QGIS
Prior experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
Effective time management skills and ability to work steadily under pressure
A positive attitude and a belief in teamwork
Working knowledge of government requirements
