10-bed unit providing psychiatric assessments and treatment initiation for adolescents aged 12-18. The average length of stay is four weeks. Adolescents are generally admitted to the program through a planned admission process.
A first in Canada: minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs) are being introduced in B.C.! What you’ll do
- Provide leadership to the interdisciplinary team by coordinating patient care and quality assurance activities, providing information and consultation to nurses, youth and family counsellors, and other health care providers and students through methods such as reviewing workload.
- Provide work direction to staff by methods such as scheduling, coordinating and adjusting work activities in accordance with the needs of the Program and establishing priorities. Help manage the operation of the Unit/Program and supports the delivery of direct/indirect patient care within budgeted resources.
- Identify individual nurse’s and youth and family counsellors’ learning needs and helps to implement appropriate plan to allow nurse to achieve desired level of competency related to knowledge, skills, attitudes, and clinical judgments in collaboration with the Clinical Instructor or designate. Participate in competency based education/preceptorship pathways. Strategies used to mentor will include role modeling, coaching, teaching and acting as a clinical resource for nursing staff by sharing clinical expertise and providing clinical guidance. Coach nursing staff regarding nursing practice skills by demonstration and explanation and by encouraging novices to take advantage of learning opportunities.
- Participate in the performance appraisal process for nursing staff by providing input to Clinical Nurse Coordinator and/or Clinical Instructor on individual nurse’s performance.
- Provide clinical leadership and consultation to clinical staff and students to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care through methods such as ensuring compliance with standards of practice and promoting staff collaboration with health care professionals.

Qualifications
- Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as an RN or RPN with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
- Three (3) year’s recent tertiary experience in the child and adolescent mental health, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Current CPR certification.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the historic and ongoing impacts of settler colonialism and systemic racism on Indigenous Peoples within social and health contexts. This includes understanding how these factors contribute to current health disparities and barriers to care. Show a clear commitment to identifying, challenging, and eradicating Indigenous-specific racism and all forms of discrimination impacting equity-deserving groups within healthcare settings. This involves recognizing personal biases, institutional barriers, engaging in anti-racism education and training and advocating for systemic change.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments within BCCH contexts found in the foundational documents including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study, BC Human Rights Code, Anti-racism Data Act and how they intersect across the health care system.

Foster trust through respectful communication, active listening, and honoring equity-deserving people's perspectives on health and wellness. Participate in workshops, cultural immersion experiences, and continuous professional development to stay informed and responsive to equity-deserving groups. Provide patient-centred care that respects Indigenous ways of knowing and healing, respects BIPOC experiences and world views ensuring that care plans are culturally relevant and holistic.
- Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).

- Demonstrates foundational knowledge of the social, economic, and political realities of settler-colonialism and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups within social and health contexts. Understands the impact of social determinants of health-on-health outcomes.
