Our client is a publicly traded natural resources organization with mining and exploration operations across North America. As the company continues to grow, they are seeking a Payroll Specialist to support a diverse workforce spanning multiple Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions.
Position Summary
The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for full-cycle payroll processing for Canadian employees while supporting the review and approval of U.S. payroll operations across multiple jurisdictions. This role will oversee payroll for both hourly and salaried employees, manage benefits administration, and ensure compliance with applicable payroll legislation. The ideal candidate will have strong payroll systems knowledge and experience working in complex or partially manual payroll environments.
Key Responsibilities
Process full-cycle payroll for employees located in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, ensuring timely and accurate payroll delivery.
Review, validate, and approve multi-jurisdictional U.S. payroll for a combination of hourly and salaried employees.
Process employee timesheets, including regular hours, overtime, bonuses, and other earnings adjustments.
Administer employee benefits programs, including enrollments, changes, terminations, and payroll deductions.
Process and reconcile 401(k) contributions and related payroll activities for U.S.-based employees.
Calculate and process annual incentive payments, bonuses, and other variable compensation.
Maintain accurate payroll records and employee data while ensuring compliance with Canadian and U.S. regulations.
Prepare payroll reconciliations, remittances, and year-end reporting requirements.
Respond to employee payroll and benefits inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
Partner with HR, Finance, and external payroll providers to ensure payroll accuracy and compliance.
Assist with payroll audits and identify opportunities for process improvements and enhanced controls.
Qualifications
3+ years of payroll experience in a multi-provincial and/or multi-state environment.
Experience processing payroll for both hourly and salaried employees.
Strong knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, particularly in British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
Exposure to U.S. payroll practices, including multi-state payroll and 401(k) administration.
Experience administering employee benefits programs.
Proficiency with payroll systems, HRIS platforms, and Microsoft Excel.
Prior experience working within a manual or semi-manual payroll environment is highly preferred.
PCP designation (or working toward completion) is considered an asset.
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage competing priorities
