Role Purpose
The HACCP Coordinator is accountable for the development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the HACCP Program and Preventive Control Programs across assigned DFF facilities. This role is the operational backbone of food safety compliance, ensuring regulatory requirements are met, GMP fundamentals are enforced, and the facility's BRC certification and CFIA standing are upheld. The HACCP Coordinator works cross-functionally with QA, Production, Maintenance, and Operations, and reports directly to the Quality Assurance Manager.
Key Accountabilities
- Maintain the integrity and accuracy of HACCP and Preventive Control Programs at all times
- Ensure all products meet food safety standards and regulatory requirements under SFCR and CFIA
- Sustain BRC certification readiness and support ongoing internal and external audit cycles
- Drive corrective and preventive action processes arising from audit findings, complaints, or HACCP reassessments
- Build food safety capability through structured GMP and HACCP training across the facility
Core Responsibilities
Food Safety & HACCP Program Management
- Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of HACCP Plans and Preventive Control Programs in compliance with SFCR, CFIA, and applicable food safety regulations
- Coordinate annual HACCP and Preventive Control Program reassessments; update plans, SOPs, and associated forms as required
- Establish and maintain management and control systems to ensure sustained regulatory compliance and quality system integrity
- Verify HACCP and PCP documents and procedures through on-site verifications and records review
- Identify, escalate, and resolve HACCP and Preventive Control non-conformances in a timely manner
- Support traceability exercises and mock recall activities
- Provide recommendations for quality program improvement, corrective actions, and preventive measures
Audits & Compliance
- Conduct internal audits across GMP, HACCP, and Preventive Control Programs; document findings and track corrective actions to closure
- Support external audits and regulatory inspections including BRC, CFIA, and customer audits; prepare facility teams and documentation in advance
- Monitor CFIA CVS and CAR activity; ensure timely and complete responses
- Maintain current knowledge of SFCR, CFIA Safe Food for Canadians regulations, and applicable provincial food safety standards
SOPs & Documentation
- Update and maintain SOPs, work instructions, and QA forms resulting from program changes, reassessments, or audit findings
- Ensure all documentation is version-controlled, accurately completed, and audit-ready at all times
- Support the QA Manager in maintaining the facility's document control system
Training & People Engagement
- Organize and deliver structured training programs in HACCP, GMP, food safety policies, and quality procedures for production and support staff
- Coach employees and supervisors on food safety fundamentals and program requirements; reinforce compliance culture on the floor
- Collaborate with department leads to embed food safety accountability across production, sanitation, and maintenance teams
Cross-Functional & Leadership
- Collaborate with Maintenance, Production, and Sanitation to integrate food safety requirements into operational workflows
- Support the QA Manager in department coverage, audit preparation, and program development initiatives
- Exemplify DFF values of People, Safety, Integrity, Quality, and Customer Focus in all interactions
- Complete all other duties as assigned by the Quality Assurance Manager
Key Performance Indicators
- CFIA CVS rating: number and severity of compliance verification findings
- CFIA CAR rate: number of corrective action requests issued and time to close
- BRC audit rating: grade maintained at AA or above
- Internal audit completion rate: all scheduled audits conducted on time with corrective actions tracked
- HACCP Program integrity: accuracy and currency of HACCP Plans and PCP documentation
- Customer complaint rate: food safety-related complaints per production volume
- Training completion rate: GMP and HACCP training completed by target employee groups within defined timelines
Position Requirements & Skills
Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a QA Technician, HACCP Coordinator, or food safety role within a food processing or regulated manufacturing environment
- Hands-on experience developing, maintaining, or auditing HACCP Programs and Preventive Control Plans
- Familiarity with CFIA inspection processes, CVS, and BRC or equivalent third-party food safety certification audits
- Experience in a federally inspected meat processing facility is a strong asset
Education & Certification
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, or a related field
- HACCP certification (PCQI, FSEP, or equivalent) preferred
- BRC Internal Auditor certification is an asset
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong working knowledge of HACCP principles, Preventive Control Plans, and SFCR/CFIA regulatory framework
- Solid understanding of GMP standards and food safety management systems (GFSI-recognized schemes preferred)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to deliver training effectively to diverse audiences
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with QMS or document control software is an asset
- Ability to manage multiple programs and deadlines concurrently in a fast-paced production environment
- Strong attention to detail, organizational discipline, and follow-through
- Collaborative work style with the ability to work independently when required
Working Conditions
Work Environment
Food production facility; exposure to refrigerated, frozen, and warm environments
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; occasional lifting
Schedule
Monday to Friday; occasional weekend requirements during audits or program reviews
PPE Requirements
Hair net, hearing protection, steel-toed footwear, lab coat as required by area
Travel
Potential travel between DFF facilities as required
Pay: $50,000.00-$58,000.00 per year
