Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced Underwriter to join our Non-Standard Personal Lines Team.
Working as part of a team, you will be responsible for analyzing the acceptability of business opportunities according to company guidelines. This includes reviewing and pricing new submissions, renewal business, and endorsements. You will collaborate with the team leader, colleagues, and management to deliver value-added expertise and exceptional service to our broker partners.
As an Underwriter, you will help drive the growth and profitability of SPG Canada. You will build strong broker relationships and leverage your expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit to grow your book. Supported by a team of experienced practice leaders, managers, and executives, we provide an extensive array of products, ample capacity, and the empowerment needed to enable your success.
This is a hybrid position in our Vancouver, Langley or Salmon Arm, BC, office.
Responsibilities
In this position you will:
- Perform risk analysis using internal and external data resources for the purpose of quoting, negotiating, and authorizing the acceptance of risk across varying levels of complexity;
- Accept, reject, endorse, renew, or cancel policies in accordance with organizational guidelines, procedures, and delegated authority parameters;
- Negotiate coverage and price with brokers within established corporate guidelines and delegated authority parameters;
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including attending industry-related seminars and networking events as necessary;
- Develop and support professional business partnerships with brokers by providing prompt and professional service, responding to inquiries, acting proactively, and taking ownership of issues with a solution-oriented approach;
- Communicate decisions and respond to requests in a prompt and professional manner;
- Maintain compliance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority parameters;
- Complete loss reports and post-claim underwriting reviews;
- Maintain service level agreements with brokerages;
- Manage and grow a book of profitable business;
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of underwriting guidelines and market trends;
- Participate in broker visits and company events, with increasing independence as experience develops; and
- Support the development of team members through knowledge sharing and mentorship, commensurate with experience level.
Qualifications and Characteristics
You’re a good fit if you have:
- 2 - 4+ years of relevant experience in personal underwriting;
- Hold a Level 2 broker license, or can qualify to obtain within 90 days
- Sound to advanced understanding of personal lines underwriting theory and the ability to apply this knowledge in day-to-day practice;
- Anticipate and meet the needs of customers; deliver high quality service and are committed to continuous improvement;
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, with strong relationship building and customer service abilities;
- Ability to make well-informed, effective, and timely decisions while managing competing priorities within allocated timeframes;
- Takes full ownership of work-related activities; follows through on commitments and maintains confidentiality with sensitive information;
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment to accomplish goals;
- Deal effectively with pressure, maintain a positive outlook, and recover quickly from setbacks;
- Ability to think strategically, set priorities, and implement plans consistent with the long-term interests of the organization;
- Ability to pursue and achieve production targets;
- Positively influence team members and contribute to a supportive, goal-oriented team culture, including mentorship of less experienced colleagues commensurate with experience level;
- Foster positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including networking at industry events and acting as a brand ambassador for the organization;
- Currently pursuing or holding a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designation is an asset; and
- Working knowledge of MS Office.

Salary Range
The expected salary range for this position ranges from $55,000 – $70,000 annually and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
