JOB LOCATION: 165 Line 4 South, Oro-Medonte - Just 10 minutes north of Barrie (Public Transportation is not available)
JOB PURPOSE:
The CNC Programmer/Machinist (Milling) is a senior, high-level programmer and machinist who plans, programs, and machines complex injection-mold and precision tooling components with minimal supervision. This person owns MPC's most demanding milling work — cores, cavities, electrodes, and close-tolerance details — proving out programs with confidence and consistently delivering accurate parts on time. Beyond running the machines, the role drives the success of the milling area: setting programming and work-holding standards, optimizing cycle times and surface finish, mentoring less-experienced machinists, and advancing MPC's scientific, Industry 4.0 approach to mold manufacturing.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Drive on-time, first-pass delivery of complex mold and tooling components from the milling area.
- Own the programming and prove-out of the most difficult parts (cores, cavities, electrodes, hard-milled details) so they run right the first time.
- Establish and uphold programming, tooling, and work-holding standards that raise quality and machine utilization across the milling cell.
- Continuously reduce cycle times and improve surface finish without compromising tolerance.
- Maximize unattended / lights-out runtime through reliable automation and pallet-cell setups.
- Mentor and develop junior machinists and programmers, raising the overall capability of the milling team.
DUTIES:
Programming & CAM
- Develop, simulate, and verify CNC milling programs using CAM software (Cimatron), including complex 3D mold geometry and electrode machining.
- Select cutting tools, speeds, feeds, and machining strategies for high-speed and hard-milling applications.
- Create and optimize toolpaths for efficient material removal, tight tolerance, and superior surface finish.
- Simulate and verify programs before first run to prevent collisions and errors.
- Revise and optimize existing programs based on cycle-time and quality results.
- Design and build fixtures and work-holding to support efficient, repeatable milling operations.
Machine Setup & Operation
- Set up, operate, and program CNC milling machines to produce precision mold and tooling components.
- Load cutting tools, fixtures, and workpieces using vises, electro-magnets, clamping, pallets, and other work-holding strategies.
- Set machine offsets for workpiece position and tool sizes using in-machine probing, indicators, and laser measurement systems.
- Load and set up automated pallet cells and robotic pallet changers for unattended operation.
- Read and interpret 2D drawings, 3D models, and G-code for setup, troubleshooting, and adjustment.
Manual Machining & Component Prep
- Operate manual machining equipment (mill, lathe, surface grinder, saw) for component preparation and finishing.
- Apply machining mathematics for offsets, angles, and dimensions.
Planning, Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Manage and prioritize work to optimize machine utilization and meet project deadlines.
- Inspect first-run and in-process parts to confirm conformance to tight tolerances.
- Identify and implement improvements to tooling, programs, and processes.
- Coach and support junior machinists on setup, programming, and shop best practices.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- Licensed Red Seal Machinist (General Machinist) or equivalent post-secondary technical education.
