About us
Urban International School (UIS) is a private high school in Toronto inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education in Ontario, Canada. Over the last decade, we have offered specialized academic courses that are designed for students who wish to pursue higher education in Canada and around the world. Based on the program students wish to pursue in post-secondary school, UIS prepares a customized study plan that underlies one of our four streams: Engineering, Science/Math, Business, Arts or College. Most of our graduates are accepted in prestigious universities such as the University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, McGill University, among many other Canadian and international universities.
UIS has a friendly and dedicated team of Ontario-certified teachers who teach courses from Grade 7 to Grade 12 to a diverse student body that includes students from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America.
About the Position
We are currently seeking a motivated and bilingual Taiwanese Student Counsellor to join our growing team in Toronto. This is a long-term, full-time role for a candidate who is fluent in both Mandarin and English. The successful candidate will play a dual role: actively recruiting Taiwanese students by building and maintaining relationships with educational agencies and families in Taiwan along with the UIS oversea office in Taipei and providing ongoing student care and support to current Taiwanese students enrolled at UIS. This position may requires business travel to Taiwan approximately twice a year, with each trip lasting two to three weeks.
Key Responsibilities
Student Care & Support
- Serve as the primary point of contact and trusted advocate for enrolled Taiwanese students throughout their time at UIS.
- Provide comprehensive transition support to newly enrolled students, including orientation to school life, Canadian culture, and local community resources.
- Conduct regular one-on-one check-ins with students to monitor their academic, social, and emotional well-being in coordination with the Student Welfare Department and the Principal's Office.
- Maintain proactive and regular communication with student parents and guardians — including scheduled progress updates, prompt notification of any concerns, and responsive follow-up to parent inquiries.
- Serve as a cultural and linguistic bridge between students, families, and the school, ensuring clear understanding of school expectations, policies, and Canadian educational norms.
- Coordinate student wellness and activity services as needed.
- Respond promptly to inquiries from students, parents, and agencies via email, phone, and in-person meetings.
Admissions & Administration
- Assist with Taiwanese student admission tasks including invoicing, letters of acceptance, and study plan preparation.
- Coordinate student accommodation arrangements in collaboration with the Accommodation Department.
- Maintain accurate digital and physical student records, including Ontario Student Records (OSR), in accordance with school policy under the supervision of the Principal’s office.
- Support student course enrollment and scheduling in coordination with the Principal’s Office.
Recruitment & Agency Relations
- Collaborate with the UIS Taipei Office as a team to support student recruitment efforts from Taiwan. This includes building and maintaining relationships with Taiwanese educational agencies, student parents, and prospective students to drive enrollment growth.
- Represent UIS at educational fairs, agency events, and school presentations in Canada and Taiwan when required.
- May travel to Taiwan approximately twice a year (two to three weeks per trip) for business meetings, educational fairs, and agency development.
- Prepare and localize marketing materials in Taiwan for agencies, parents, and prospective students with the UIS Taipei Office.
Academic Follow-Up
- Monitor and follow up on the academic progress and class attendance of enrolled Taiwanese students, in coordination with the Principal’s Office.
- Serve as the primary point of contact between Taiwanese students and the Principal’s Office for academic matters, ensuring timely communication and resolution of any concerns.
- Support students in understanding their academic requirements, course schedules, and school expectations.
School Events & Community
- Actively participate in the planning and execution of school-wide events including graduation ceremonies, school festivals, talent shows, and other community activities.
- Contribute as a collaborative team member across all school departments during school events and special initiatives.
General
- Other duties as assigned by the management team.
- Provide regular progress reports to the management team on recruitment activities, student issues, and market developments.
Qualifications & Skills
- Fluent in both Mandarin, ,Taiwanese and English (written and spoken) — required. Speaking Cantonese a strong asset.
- Post-secondary degree in Education, Marketing, Business, Languages, or a related field.
- Previous experience in the education industry (high school, post-secondary, or ESL) is an asset.
- Knowledge of the Canadian student visa process is an asset.
- Familiarity with the Ontario Curriculum, OUAC, and OCAS is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a professional and approachable manner.
- Highly organized with strong administrative skills and attention to detail.
- Self-motivated and goal-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Comfortable working flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends for events.
- Strong team player with the ability to work collaboratively across departments and contribute to a positive and supportive work environment
- Demonstrates a high level of professionalism with a strong respect for organizational policies, procedures, and workplace guidelines
- Willingness to travel to Taiwan as required.
