Job Summary
As we grow, we’re seeking a Senior Structures Engineer to lead the stewardship, assessment, and renewal of HBR’s structural assets, including 68 bridges and 1,300 culverts across six subdivisions. This is a rare opportunity to apply advanced engineering expertise to some of the most unique and challenging rail infrastructure in Canada.
Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Senior Structures Engineer provides technical leadership for the planning, inspection, assessment, rehabilitation, and lifecycle management of HBR’s structural assets. The role combines hands-on fieldwork, advanced structural analysis, project delivery, and mentorship of junior engineering staff.
You will collaborate closely with operations, maintenance, contractors, consultants, regulators, and northern communities to ensure the safety, reliability, and long-term resilience of HBR’s infrastructure. Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Serve as HBR’s senior technical authority for bridges and structural engineering.
- Lead structural assessments, load ratings, rehabilitation strategies, and design reviews.
- Ensure compliance with AREMA, Transport Canada regulations, and Canadian bridge codes.
Asset Management
- Develop and implement lifecycle strategies for 68 bridges and 1,300 culverts.
- Oversee inspection programs, condition ratings, and risk-based prioritization.
- Maintain accurate asset data, reports, and long-term capital planning inputs.
Project Delivery
- Lead planning, design, and execution of structural capital and rehabilitation projects.
- Manage consultants, contractors, and engineering service providers.
- Prepare and review technical specifications, drawings, and engineering reports.
- Provide independent technical review and quality assurance.
Field Operations
- Conduct inspections of bridges and culverts across all subdivisions.
- Train junior staff in inspection techniques, safety practices, and reporting standards.
- Support emergency response and rapid assessment following extreme weather or operational incidents.
- Perform site visits in remote northern environments, including permafrost-affected and hydrologically dynamic areas.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Work with operations, maintenance, regulators, Indigenous communities, and local governments.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
Leadership & Mentorship
- Provide guidance and technical development for junior engineers and technicians.
- Foster a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.
Qualifications & Education
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Manitoba, or eligibility for registration.
- 10+ years of experience in bridge or rail structure engineering.
- Proven experience in inspection, assessment, design, and rehabilitation of transportation structures.
- Strong understanding of AREMA, CSA, and Canadian bridge design codes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in rail corridors or remote northern environments.
- Proficiency with structural analysis software (e.g., MIDAS, SAP2000, CSI Bridge).
- Experience with asset management systems and lifecycle planning.
- Demonstrated leadership in multidisciplinary project environments.

Work Conditions
- On-site presence is required periodically throughout the year, with an emphasis on the summer work season, but also periodically outside the summer work season.
- Significant fieldwork is expected, especially during bridge and culvert inspections across all HBR subdivisions.
- This position will be based in The Pas, Manitoba. (Hybrid with seasonal on-site requirements).
- Occasional travel to northern communities by road, rail, or air.
- Periodic extended hours during peak periods.
Pay: $120,000.00-$140,000.00 per year
