Who is Chief Red Bear Children’s Lodge?
Cowessess First Nation is the first Indigenous rights holder Nation to sign a coordination agreement in Canada. Cowessess First Nation asserted jurisdiction when it comes to child welfare and family services through the implementation of the Miyo Pimatisowin Act and respected by Canada through their Bill C-92 legislation. Chief Red Bear Children’s Lodge (CRBCL), which has jurisdiction from the Miyo Pimatisowin Act, changes the approach of child and family services by providing support in a way that is rooted in traditional Indigenous values and cultural practices. Rather than the common intervention approach, CRBCL provides empowerment through a prevention approach with healing and prevention as the preferred method for ensuring children and their families are safe and growing together in a healthy way.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate CEO, the Director of Intervention and Healing plays a pivotal leadership role in overseeing and supporting the Growing Up Well Workers as they walk alongside children and families involved in child protection services. This position ensures that children, youth, parents, caregivers, and extended family members receive timely, individualized, culturally appropriate, and healing-centered support while navigating complex child welfare and child protection systems. The Director provides guidance, supervision, and strategic direction to the Growing Up Well Workers, helping to strengthen advocacy, service coordination, family connection, cultural continuity, and planning that promotes the safety and well-being of Cowessess children and families.
In addition, the Director will lead the growth and development of the Intervention and Healing team, including the creation, implementation, and continuous improvement of policies, programs, practice tools, and service pathways. The Director will work closely with the Growing Up Well Workers and collaborate with community resources and CRBCL departments, including the Prevention, Young Adulthood, and Culture Teams, to design and deliver supports that strengthen families, promote healing, reduce service gaps, and help prevent the need for formal child welfare intervention whenever safely possible.
This role provides a unique opportunity for a dynamic and experienced leader to directly advocate for children and families while building a strong, accountable, and culturally grounded Intervention and Healing team. The Director will assume leadership responsibility for setting the vision, direction, goals, policies, and program priorities for the team, while ensuring that Growing Up Well Workers are supported, trained, and empowered to meet the needs of children and families involved in child protection services. Additionally, the Director will lead efforts to build key partnerships, support the historic transfer of Cowessess children in care back to their home Nation, and address service gaps to ensure comprehensive support for the Cowessess First Nation community.
