Join The Upper Canada District School Board

We are currently accepting applications for English Language Learner (ELL) Instructor. Under the supervision of the Principal and under the direction of the classroom teacher(s), the English Language Learner (ELL) Instructor is responsible for the provision of support to students trying to acquire English language skills within the school. The ELL Instructor supports teachers and other professional staff by instructing individuals and groups of students in an academic and/or integrated class environment, supporting social and academic integration as well as assisting the teacher with classroom management, when required. The Instructor works collaboratively within a team environment and assists the classroom teacher or LRT in the implementation of learning assessments (e.g. STEP) and individual educational plans.

Qualifications and Experience:

A two- year college diploma in child studies or a related educational field is required.
Previous English Second Language instruction is preferred.
Related employment or volunteer experience in teaching, social work or immigration services is an asset.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
TESL qualifications are an asset.

Sensitivity to diversity and the needs of English Language Learners (ELL) from many different backgrounds
Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply the basic precepts of education such as, a positive attitude towards learning and a belief that all learners can improve
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and organizational skills
Well developed listening and communication skills
Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality of information
Ability to be flexible, adaptable, patient and understanding
Proficient with word processing and related computer software programs (e.g. email)
Ability to learn new software programs, as required
Ability to communicate effectively with students, co-workers, Board personnel and parents (under the direction of the classroom teacher(s))
Ability to act as a team player and work independently with minimal supervision
Ability to work with students both in a one on one and in a classroom environment
Ability to independently carry out an educational plan as directed by the classroom teacher(s)
Ability to act as an advocate for cultural diversity

Roles & Responsibilities:

Performs other related duties as required.
Maintains confidentiality regarding school and student issues.
Demonstrates good attendance and works in a healthy and safe manner.
Deals with professional issues in a supportive environment.
Broaden the awareness of colleagues of ESL issues within the school environment (e.g. cultural tradition, beliefs and differences and how they may affect learning).
Advocates for ELL students (e.g. attending student support team meetings, assisting the orientation of ELL students in the school environment).
Attends regularly scheduled UCDSB professional development activities for ELL Instructors.
Maintains a safe and non-threatening working and learning environment.
Works as part of the education team to identify short term and long-term goals for students.
Supervises and instructs students both in a one on one and in a classroom environment.
Works with the teacher to provide feedback for parent-teacher interviews.
Reaffirms information to students regarding appropriate classroom and school behaviour such as social skills and problem-solving skills.
Encourages learners to develop positive attitudes towards education and appreciation of lifelong learning.
Maintains student classroom portfolios, as required and assists keeping absent students current with learning activities.
Assists teaching staff with the assessment of student language acquisition and may provide input for the evaluation of courses and student progress (e.g. providing feedback to students).
Assists ELL students with the completion of assignments and reviews homework by checking on completion, correctness and understanding of instruction.
Instructs individual and small groups of ELL students in language acquisition, cultural appreciation and citizenship (e.g. scribe, read aloud, rephrase…etc.).
Reinforces daily lesson plans and may communicate with parents through a communication log, as directed by the teacher.
Uses assessment results to assist teachers with the development, differentiation and implementation of learner-centered instructional materials to support student learning, including ELLs with special needs.
