Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Executive Dean, the Interim Associate Dean works towards a strategic vision for the Faculty of Business & Information Technology, with a focus on information technology-related programs. The Interim Associate Dean will bring strong organizational, administrative, and academic leadership skills, joining a dynamic team dedicated to delivering innovative, market-driven programming. An exceptional communicator and skilled problem-solver, the successful candidate will provide leadership, guidance, and support to students, faculty, staff, and industry partners to foster success across all areas of the Faculty.
The Interim Associate Dean will embody Durham College’s mission, vision, and values, demonstrating a collaborative and respectful leadership approach. Working closely with the Executive Dean, the Interim Associate Dean will contribute to the development and execution of strategic priorities, support academic operations, and represent the Faculty both internally and externally.
Strategic Leadership & Planning
- Contribute to institutional planning, development and strategic initiatives aligned with the Academic Plan and Business Plan through active involvement on the Academic Leadership Team, college committees and working groups.

Support enrolment planning, forecasting, and budgeting activities, including enrolment growth strategies, capacity optimization, scheduling efficiency, and resource planning

Identify and recommend opportunities for revenue generation, program development and financial management to support sustainability of programs.

Lead the development and communication of the Faculty Academic Plan, including the establishment of measurable annual goals

Develop, model and reinforce values that align with and support the Faculty’s strategic direction, while building consensus and fostering commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.

Advance the implementation of initiatives established by the college and government authorities as they relate to the Faculty’s academic enterprise including quality plans, PLAR, Essential Employability Skills and the Minister’s Binding Policy Directives on Programs of Study.
Faculty Leadership & Fiscal Management
-
Lead day-to-day Faculty operations, including effective leadership of initiatives, meetings and committees.
Participate in Faculty and College academic events and ceremonies such as program information nights, Convocation, honours ceremonies, program events etc. -
Foster a positive culture by recognizing faculty and staff achievements, particularly in relation to teaching and service responsibilities.

Support effective internal communications, ensuring staff are informed of Faculty and College developments in a timely manner.

Support program marketing and recruitment efforts in coordination with the college’s marketing department.

Monitor Faculty risk management and safety, ensuring timely completion of insurance-related activities, documentation, and communications, and collaboration with relevant College departments to maintain a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Develop and implement policies, procedures and systems to guide the effective utilization of Faculty resources.

Collaborate with the executive dean to formulate, defend, and effectively manage the Faculty operating budget, including securing and allocating resources to support activities in the Faculty’s best interests.

Prepare enrolment projections to support the annual College budget planning and review budget spreadsheets provided by the College’s Finance department for accuracy.

Collaborate with Faculty staff to develop capital budgets to support facility improvements.

Monitor and approve Faculty expenditures, ensuring accuracy and accountability.

Ensure the effective use of financial, physical and human resources, through ongoing review and strategic reallocation as needed.
Academic Program Quality, Development & Innovation
-
Support the development and implementation of a strategic curriculum process that clarifies curriculum goals and addresses program priorities, currency, quality, and flexibility in a cost-effective way.

Promote effective and innovative teaching and learning practices, supporting faculty development, program quality and teaching excellence in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

Provide leadership in program development and renewal, including curriculum review, new program development, accreditation processes, and advisory committees
-
Collaborate with executive dean and relevant departments to identify, negotiate and oversee academic articulation agreements with other institutions.

Champion innovation in program delivery, including the integration of emerging technologies, simulation, and applied learning approaches
People Leadership, Recruitment and Development
- Lead hiring processes, including determining the skills, competencies and qualifications required based on identified academic needs, and recruiting, selecting, and onboarding full-time and contract faculty and support staff.

Evaluate performance of faculty and support staff in alignment with academic standards and HR requirements, along with coaching and mentoring as needed.

Conduct and document disciplinary actions, when necessary, in accordance with college policies and collective agreements.

Administer and approve resource allocation to support professional development of faculty and staff.

Supervise faculty, co-ordinators, and support staff within the Faculty.
-
Manage and resolve conflicts, serving as an arbitrator for complex faculty/staff issues to ensure minimal organizational disruption.

Ensure up-to-date knowledge of and adherence to academic and support staff union contracts, college and ministry policies, and college expectations.
Workload Assignments

Assign full-time faculty workloads based on program requirements, in accordance with college practice and current union collective agreements.

Address faculty-related workload concerns and ensure an effective working environment for employees and the teaching/learning process.

Monitor course registrations and appropriately adjust course schedules, instructor assignments and overtime etc. as required.
Operations, Resources & Facilities
-
Support scheduling and timetable development throughout the academic year, collaborating with Faculty staff and Central Scheduling to ensure schedule accuracy and alignment with instructional, facility and student requirements.

Identify, plan and implement solutions to address facility and scheduling constraints as well as program resource needs, including specialized space, equipment, and facilities.

Promote and ensure adherence to health and safety standards across all learning environments.
Student Success & Experience

Oversee student academic advising functions within the Faculty, working closely with student advisors to support incoming and continuing students and respond to student academic issues as required.

Respond within policy timelines to grade appeals, complaints and other student concerns.

Manage student conduct and disciplinary processes in accordance with College policies and collective agreements.
Partnerships, Pathways & External Engagement
-
Build and sustain strong relationships with industry, employers, government, school boards, and community partners.

Collaborate with Program Advisory Committees, Board of Directors and other external bodies to ensure programs are relevant and current.

Support the development and oversight of articulation agreements and academic partnerships
-
Act as formal contact between the Faculty and other College areas, facilitating cross-department collaboration and problem-solving.

Serve as a visible ambassador for the Faculty and the College at recruitment events and external engagements.

Represent the Faculty on community and college-system committees, including engagement with provincial colleagues through regional and provincial meetings.

Monitor the external environment to identify future opportunities for the College, including political and sector trends at the local and provincial levels.

Advocate for Faculty priorities across the institution as well as within the local community and broader college system, through engagement with external partners and organizations.
Qualifications, Skills & Competencies:

A minimum of a Master’s degree in a field relevant to the Faculty of Business & Information Technology.
-
A minimum of seven (7) years of leadership experience in an academic setting is required.
-
Relevant industry experience in information technology is considered an asset.
-
General expertise with and knowledge of programs offered within the Faculty, along with at least two years of teaching experience in a college environment.

The successful candidate will have leadership, administrative, and project management expertise with a proven ability to perform effectively in fast-paced, high-demand environments.

Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in all matters related to students, staffing and programming.

Proven ability to cope with a demanding workload, remain calm and focused while under pressure, and engage successfully with individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives and needs.

Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are required, along with excellent time-management and organization skills, and a proven ability to set and achieve goals.

Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution and advocacy for staff, students, programs, and the College.

Understanding of and experience with curriculum development and revision.
