Job Summary:

The Youth Support Worker at Orca Lelum plays a vital role in assisting clients with their physical, economic, recreational, social, emotional and daily life skills development. This individual supports clients to achieve the greatest degree of independence and quality of life possible.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Participates in the implementation of individualized wellness plans with regards to goal setting and program planning (Personal Service Plan) for the youth being supported, this includes monitoring and reviewing the youth’s relevant skill strengths and needs;

2. Provide general supervision within the facility and while out in the community to ensure the safety and wellbeing of youth;

3. Fulfill the role and responsibilities of a caregiver as set out in the young spirits wellness plans and in accordance with provincial legislation and standards;

4. Implement and utilize, on a consistent basis, supports and interventions that help develop positive behaviors in youth and address problematic behaviors.

5. Act as a positive role model, provide stable companionship and constructive support in all matters personal, health and emotional; and take pro-active and focused actions to support skill development in clients, including daily life skills, emotion regulation and recreational abilities.

6. Regardless of one’s background, caregivers will work respectfully, knowledgeably and effectively with the Indigenous youth, their families, service providers and community members, and create cultural safety for the youth and other people with whom caregivers come into contact with.

7. Supports the mental and physical health of youth based on the direction of health professionals and guidance of the wellness team; and oversee the administering and dispensing of medication;

8. Supports youth with maintenance, personal hygiene and self care, appropriately;

9. Recognizes and responds appropriately to escalations, crisis and emergency situations, which may include aggressive or violent behaviour by youth and emergency medical situations to eliminate or minimize harm or injury; reports all critical incidents to the Youth Support Supervisor, Youth Support Administrator and Wellness Director.

10. Maintains daily logs of youth in the database system, making notes of their emotional wellbeing, ability to self-regulate in the face of difficult emotions, recreational and cultural activities, and behaviour intervention strategies used, hygiene, cultural connections and overall wellbeing. Ensures that all required documentation is complete and accurate before the end of each shift and provides a verbal debrief to co-workers at the start and end of every shift. Regularly reviews the shift change over summary, daily logs, meeting minutes, behavior intervention plans, wellness plans, policies and all other key operational documents for every shift worked and ensures awareness of and changes in youths’ wellness plans.

11. Graveyard shift involves performing janitorial and sanitation tasks.

12. Follows provincial legislation, regulations and standards when working with youth, including but not limited to:

a. Child, Family and Community Service Act (CFCSA) and the CFCSA regulation;

b. Standards for Staffed Children’s Residential Services;

c. Standards for Foster Homes;

d. Community Care and Assisted Living Act (CCALA);

e. CCALA Residential Care Regulation; and

f. Any policy or practice directives issued under the authority of the CFCSA and Kw’umut Lelum Child and Family Services

13. Other duties as required, within scope.

Qualifications & Requirements:

o Diploma in Child and Youth Care, Social Work, Criminology or equivalent training/experience

o Must possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Office

o Negative TB screening result

o Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License.

o Valid First Aid Certificate - Emergency First Aid – Community Care.

o Must consent to a criminal record check.

o Good working knowledge of Coast Salish teachings is an asset.

o Ability to work under stress/pressure

o Sound judgment and problem-solving skills

o Strong interpersonal and communication skills – written and oral

o Ability to effectively use standard computer applications
