Why Redlen Technologies?
Redlen Technologies is a pioneering company that has revolutionized the semiconductor crystal growth and fabrication process.
At Redlen Technologies, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. Our founder's visionary work with the Canadian Space Agency laid the foundation for our groundbreaking Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) sensors, revolutionizing medical imaging, security imaging, and non-destructive testing. We are driving a quantum leap forward in medical CT scanners, elevating diagnostic accuracy while reducing radiation dose– a technological feat that has earned us global recognition. With a commitment to excellence, we have earned the trust of Fortune 500 industry customers, leading to our acquisition by Canon Inc. for $430M– a testament to our industry leadership.
With over 200 dedicated professionals, we take pride in fostering a work environment where Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professionals thrive. As an equal opportunity employer we demonstrate that diversity drives innovation, and we are passionate about building a future where every employee contributes to our mission-driven success. Redlen's teams, mirroring the multifaceted diversity of Canadian society, exemplify our commitment to leveraging a wide range of ideas and backgrounds as a driving force for innovation, business excellence, and pioneering advancements in STEM.
As part of the multi-disciplinary Manufacturing Automation team, the successful candidate will focus on the demonstration & development of automation solutions for inline metrology, inspection & handling of Redlen’s CZT X-Ray Sensors. The candidate should possess expertise in automation controls, machine vision, motion control, and manufacturing systems to ensure scalable throughput, precision inspection and material handling in a semiconductor production environment.
This is a high-impact, high-ownership role where you’ll work across controls, machine vision, robotics, and factory systems to bring production-worthy automation online quickly. You’ll operate in an environment with evolving requirements, dynamic timelines, and the opportunity to shape the manufacturing platform from first principles.
The role will work cross-functionally with process engineering, facilities engineering, mechanical and software teams to deliver robust, scalable automation solutions that improve yield, capacity, and operational efficiency.
Key responsibilities:
System Design & Architecure
- Establish high-level system requirements for automated inline inspection & CZT sensor handling systems.
- Collaborate with process engineers to understand current process limitations, define inspection criteria, requirements and data outputs.
- Develop PLC/IPC-based architectures for early-stage prototypes through production-ready systems.
- Develop or work with external systems integrators on control systems for precision semiconductor sensor handling and machine vision applications (e.g., wafer stages, sensor pick-and-place, robotic handling, inline defect detection).
- Select, program and configure industrial controllers (e.g., Siemens, Beckhoff, Rockwell, Omron)
- Collaborate in the evaluation & selection of machine vision systems (2D/3D cameras, lighting, optics).) ..
System Integration & Validation
- Collaborate in internal demonstrations for CZT handling & machine vision inspection utilizing our in-house 6-Axis robotic test bench to de-risk automation solutions.
- Lead system integration, FAT/SAT, and bring-up of inspection and CZT handling tools – internally or externally developed .
Data Systems & Connectivity
- Connect equipment to the Redlen MES, SCADA & factory databases.
- Architect data capture pipelines for inspection data including images & measurement data.
- Represent the Manufacturing Automation Team in industrial network development.
Other
- Collaborate broadly with mechanical, electrical engineers & process engineers Complete documentation packages for the electrical & control systems
What makes this role different:
- You will design systems that don’t exist yet
- You will wear multiple hats: controls engineer, system integrator, vision engineer, and problem solver
- You will have direct impact on production ramp and company success
- You will work in high ambiguity environment with evolving specs—not fully defined processes
Experience Required:
- 5–8+ years of experience in automation or controls engineering in a semiconductor or high-tech / electromechanical assy manufacturing environment.
- Experience with PLC programming and industrial automation systems.
- Experience with motion control systems (servo drives, linear stages, robotics, pneumatics).
- Familiarity or exposure with machine vision systems (e.g., Cognex, Keyence, Halcon, OpenCV).
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (EtherCAT, Profinet, OPC UA, Modbus).
- Hands-on experience with system commissioning, debugging, and troubleshooting.
- Exposure to C/C++, Python, or C# for automation/inspection applications.
- Understanding & basic exposure to mechanical design concepts & CAD Tools (Solidworks, AutoCAD)
Skills/Additional Requirements:
- Strong attention to detail & quality.
- Support & drive cross-functional collaboration in the projects
- Hands – On approach to problem solving, getting your hands dirty on the MFG floor regularly.
- Exhibit a bias toward action balanced by strong analytical decision-making skills.
Education/Training:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechatronics, electrical engineering, systems engineering or an equivalent degree of education & combined work experience.
