Civil Construction – Watermain & Sewer Replacement

We are a civil construction contractor performing watermain, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and road reconstruction work in the Ottawa region. We are currently looking to add an experienced sewer crew worker to our team.
This position is intended for someone with hands-on experience in municipal water and sewer work. Depending on experience and qualifications, the successful candidate may assist with general labour duties, deckman duties, pipe laying support, or pipe laying activities.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will work as part of a sewer and watermain crew on civil infrastructure projects. The role requires someone who is reliable, safety-conscious, physically capable, and familiar with working around excavations, trench boxes, pipe, structures, equipment, and live construction sites.
This is a unionized position in the Ottawa region. Applicants should either be union members or eligible/willing to work under the applicable union requirements.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with the installation of sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, services, structures, and related underground infrastructure.
- Support the pipe layer and operator during excavation, bedding, pipe installation, backfilling, and compaction operations.
- Perform deckman duties, including assisting the excavator operator, checking grades, handling materials, and maintaining safe communication with the crew.
- Help prepare pipe, fittings, bedding material, tools, lasers, pumps, and other equipment required for the work.
- Work safely around open excavations, trench boxes, heavy equipment, live traffic, and other jobsite hazards.
- Assist with general labour tasks such as shoveling, grading, spotting, cleaning, site setup, material handling, and housekeeping.
- Follow instructions from the foreman, pipe layer, and site supervisor.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow company policies, site-specific safety requirements, and applicable health and safety regulations.
Required Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in watermain and sewer construction.
- Experience working on municipal civil infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with pipe laying, deckman duties, trench work, bedding, backfill, compaction, and working around heavy equipment.
- Understanding of jobsite safety, excavation safety, and working in a production-focused sewer crew environment.
- Ability to work outdoors in different weather conditions.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work.
- Strong communication skills and a team-oriented attitude.
- Reliable transportation to job sites in the Ottawa region.
Preferred Qualifications
The following would be considered an asset:
- Previous experience as a sewer/watermain labourer, deckman, or pipe layer assistant.
- Valid safety training certificates.
- WHMIS, Working at Heights, Confined Space Awareness, or other construction safety training.
- Ability to read basic grades, assist with lasers, and understand sewer/watermain installation procedures.
- Experience working around trench boxes, road plates, pumps, service connections, and municipal specifications.

Compensation
Compensation will be based on union classification, experience, and applicable collective agreement requirements.
