Job Title: Packaging Technician – Forklift Operator (Metal / Cutting Mill)
Job Summary
The packaging technician–forklift operator is responsible for packaging, handling, and transporting finished metal products within a metal mill and/or cutting mill environment. This role ensures products are properly packaged, labeled, and prepared for shipment while safely operating forklifts to move materials between production areas. The position may float between departments to support operational needs. Key Responsibilities
Packaging & Product Handling

Package finished metal products (tubes, cut materials, bundles, or components) according to customer and company specifications.
Apply protective materials (banding, wrapping, oiling, or covers) to prevent damage during storage and shipment.
Label, tag, and verify product identification, dimensions, and order details.
Inspect finished goods for quality issues prior to packaging and report defects.

Forklift Operation & Material Movement

Operate forklifts (counterbalance, propane, or electric) to transport materials safely within the facility.
Load and unload finished goods, skids, and bundles from production lines and trucks.
Stage packaged materials in designated shipping or storage areas.
Maintain safe load handling practices and ensure proper weight distribution.

Production Support (Floating Role)

Provide support across both metal mill and cutting mill operations as required.
Assist production teams with moving materials, staging orders, and clearing finished goods.
Adapt to changing priorities and workflows between departments.

Safety & Compliance

Follow all safety procedures, including forklift operation standards and workplace policies.
Conduct daily forklift inspections and report any defects.
Ensure proper PPE usage and maintain a safe, clean work environment.
Keep aisles, staging areas, and exits clear of obstructions.

Inventory & Documentation

Complete packaging records, shipping documentation, and material tracking as required.
Verify order accuracy against work orders and packing slips.
Assist with inventory counts and stock organization.

Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing, metal mill, or industrial environment.
Experience in packaging heavy or industrial materials is an asset.

Certifications

Valid forklift operator certification (required).

Technical Skills

Knowledge of packaging methods for metal products (banding, wrapping, stacking).
Ability to operate forklifts safely in a high-traffic industrial environment.
Basic understanding of production workflows and shipping processes.

Soft Skills

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Flexibility to work across departments.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

Work Conditions

Industrial environment with exposure to noise, dust, sharp edges, and heavy materials.
Physically demanding role involving lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Indoor/outdoor work depending on loading areas.
Shift work (days, afternoons, nights, or rotating) may be required.
