Position Summary
Salus Traffic Solutions is seeking an experienced Freeway Setup Crew Lead to join our growing operations team. This is a field leadership role intended for a traffic control professional with proven experience leading complex freeway and high-speed roadway closures throughout Ontario.
The successful candidate must have a minimum of 3 years of direct experience as a Freeway Crew Lead in Ontario, with a strong working knowledge of OTM Book 7, freeway lane closure operations, mobile operations, and complex closure coordination in live traffic environments.
This position is best suited for someone who is highly organized, safety-focused, confident leading crews, and capable of executing traffic control setups on 400-series highways and other high-volume arterial environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise freeway setup crews during the safe installation, maintenance, adjustment, and removal of traffic control closures.
- Execute traffic control setups in accordance with:
- OTM Book 7
- Site-specific traffic protection plans
- Company procedures
- Applicable client and project requirements
- Set up and oversee complex freeway closures, including but not limited to:
- Single and multi-lane closures
- Transfers
- Shoulder closures
- Ramp closures
- Mobile operations
- Rolling closures
- Emergency response traffic control setups
- Conduct pre-shift review of closure requirements, work zones, hazards, and crew assignments.
- Ensure all signs, devices, arrow boards, barrels, cones, attenuator vehicles, and support equipment are deployed correctly and remain compliant throughout the shift.
- Lead crews in high-pressure and live traffic environments while maintaining a strong focus on public, worker, and client safety.
- Communicate professionally with:
- Supervisors
- Clients
- Site superintendents
- Police / enforcement (where required)
- Other subcontractors and project stakeholders
- Complete required field documentation accurately, including:
- Daily logs
- Work orders
- Equipment checklists
- Incident / near miss reporting
- Closure notes and shift updates
- Perform site assessments and make field adjustments where required while remaining within approved closure plans and company procedures.
- Ensure all crew members are wearing proper PPE and working safely at all times.
- Monitor weather, traffic conditions, site changes, and operational risks throughout the shift.
- Mentor and support junior crew members and helpers to improve field performance and compliance.
- Assist with loading, unloading, and maintaining traffic control equipment and company vehicles.
- Report deficiencies, damaged equipment, or non-compliant field conditions.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience specifically as a Freeway Setup Crew Lead in Ontario
- Proven experience working on 400-series highways and other high-speed traffic environments
- Strong knowledge of:
- OTM Book 7
- Ontario traffic control standards and best practices
- Safe work procedures for freeway environments
- Valid Ontario G Class Driver’s Licence with clean or acceptable abstract
- Ability to confidently lead a crew in active, high-risk roadway environments
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to read and interpret Traffic control plans
- Ability to work days, nights, weekends, overtime, and on short notice as operationally required
- Physically capable of lifting, carrying, setting, and removing traffic control equipment in various weather and site conditions

Pay: $34.87-$38.27 per hour
