The purpose of the Rodperson is to assist the Survey Technician for Bridges & Highway Design section for a variety of surveys for bridges, highways and maintenance projects. This includes conducting surveys for environment, planning, design, and eventual estimating of bridge and highway projects. The incumbent may be required to conduct basic survey tasks in the absence of the Survey Technician.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Locating the centerline of the highway structure or bridge and associated highway.
- Detailed topographic survey for planning and designing of the replacement highway structure.
- Detailed stream bed profiles, in coordination with Department’s Environmental Management Section representative, for bridge construction or environmental purposes.
- Elevations of roadway centerline and cross sections for determining roadway profiles, sightlines, etc.;
- Laying out Right-of-Way or property boundaries for potential property related issues.
- Clearing small amounts of trees and brush as required to provide access for detailed surveying.
- Liaison with Department’s Survey CADD Technician as required.
- Setting up project benchmarks for future surveying
- Setting up survey equipment for survey crew chief in the field.
- Downloading survey data in order to properly layout the construction site (s).
- Laying out and adjusting the vertical profile.
- All the above duties as they relate to highway projects.
- Other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must have successful completion of Grade 12 or GED equivalent.
- Considerable experience in use of a total station, satellite-based positioning systems (GPS) and automatic level equipment.
- Considerable experience in the field of highway structure or highway construction surveying and laying out alignments.
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Must be physically able to perform the duties of the position and will require heavy lifting, working in rough terrain, working in thick brush, working on steep slopes, working in or around water, etc.
- Must be able to work independently and have good attention to detail;
- Must be able to multi-task and have good time-management skills;
- Must be willing to obtain WHIMIS and Confined Space training;
- Must be willing to obtain First Aid and/or CPR training.
- Must have access to reliable transportation and hold a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driver abstract.
- The successful incumbent must provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Records Check, prior to employment.
- The successful incumbent must provide a current hearing test, prior to employment.
- A good previous work and attendance record is required.
