The Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator, and supports research studies and research program activities within Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Alberta Children's Hospital and the University of Calgary.
The primary purpose of the Senior Research Coordinator is to provide senior-level research coordination support for pediatric infectious diseases research projects and sub-studies under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
The role is responsible for coordinating study activities, supporting ethics and regulatory submissions, maintaining study documentation, assisting with participant recruitment and follow-up, supporting data-related tasks, liaising with collaborators and institutional partners, and mentoring junior research staff, students, and trainees.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Research Program and Study Coordination:

Coordinates pediatric infectious diseases, epidemiology, immunization, vaccine confidence, vaccine clinical research, and related educational intervention and knowledge translation studies

Coordinates interdisciplinary research teams, collaborators, clinical partners, trainees, and project stakeholders

Develops and maintains study timelines, workplans, recruitment trackers, visit schedules, and close-out plans

Supports study start-up activities, including feasibility review, study file creation, site readiness, delegation documentation, onboarding, and study activation
-
Supports protocol development, review, and implementation to ensure study activities are clear, feasible, and aligned with participant safety and data integrity requirements
Ethics, Regulatory, and Institutional Approvals:
-
Prepares, submits, and maintains CHREB/IRISS ethics applications, amendments, renewals, closures, reportable events, and related documentation

Obtains and maintains required AHS, APL, institutional, departmental, legal, privacy, and study approvals
-
Ensures study activities are conducted in accordance with approved protocols, REB approvals, consent documents, institutional requirements, and privacy/confidentiality obligations

For regulated clinical trials, supports compliance with Health Canada Division 5, ICH GCP, sponsor requirements, Qualified Investigator responsibilities, and inspection-readiness expectations
Participant Recruitment, Consent, and Follow-Up:

Coordinates participant recruitment, screening, eligibility review, enrollment, consent/assent workflows, study visits, and follow-up

Communicates with children, youth, parents/caregivers, clinical staff, and research participants in a clear, respectful, non-coercive, and culturally sensitive manner

Supports participant privacy, confidentiality, dignity, safety, and welfare throughout the study lifecycle
-
Coordinates study assessments, questionnaires, clinical data collection, follow-up reminders, and data/specimen collection where required by the protocol.
Hiring, Team Training, Mentorship, and Professional Development:

Acts as a senior resource for research assistants, students, trainees, clinical team members, and collaborators

Full managerial discretion of reports. Hires, oversees, trains, mentors, and supports junior research staff and trainees in study procedures, documentation standards, participant communication, ethics compliance, and data quality expectations

Supports onboarding and training documentation for study team members, including TCPS2, GCP, Division 5, protocol-specific, system-specific, and role-specific training

Pursues relevant professional development, continuing education, and self-directed learning to maintain and strengthen clinical research knowledge and skills
Research Administration and Project Support:

Coordinates and collaborates with legal, contracts, finance, research services, and other administrative units as required for study activities

Provides administrative support to the Principal Investigator for study planning, project coordination, documentation, scheduling, and research team communication

Supports accurate documentation, timely communication, and organized research files to enable continuity across projects
Qualifications / Requirements:
-
Bachelors degree in health sciences, public health, nursing, clinical research, epidemiology, or a related field required; Masters degree preferred

Minimum 7-10 years of progressively responsible clinical research experience required in pediatric infectious diseases, vaccine clinical trials, immunization
-
Current or recent TCPS2 and Good Clinical Practice training required

Health Canada Division 5 training required for regulated clinical trial activities

Strong knowledge of University of Calgary research policies and processes, including research ethics, IRISS, AHS approvals, APL approvals, research finance, and legal pathways

Strong knowledge of TCPS2, ICH GCP, Health Canada Division 5, privacy/confidentiality obligations, informed consent, participant protection, protocol compliance, and safety reporting

Demonstrated experience preparing and maintaining REB submissions, amendments, renewals, reportable events, and study close-out documentation
-
Demonstrated experience coordinating participant recruitment, screening, consent/assent, follow-up, study visits, data collection, and retention activities
-
Experience developing study timelines, managing deadlines, monitoring deliverables, and supporting study close-out
-
Experience supporting regulated clinical trials, sponsor monitoring visits, audits, or inspection-readiness activities is strongly preferred
-
Experience coordinating data and specimen collection is an asset

Experience training, mentoring, or supporting research assistants, students, trainees, or junior staff
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Excellent organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and prioritization skills

Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining timely communication with the Principal Investigator and research team
