Field Fitter-Welder / Installation Technician

North Star Technical Inc. is seeking a Field Fitter-Welder / Installation Technician for custom onsite installation and repair work, as well as in-shop fitting and fabrication support.

This position is primarily intended for a strong fitter/installer with practical field experience, layout ability, problem-solving skills, and welding capability. Field work takes priority when required. When field work is slow, the position supports shop fitting, layout, tack-up, jig/fixture work, fabrication preparation, and welding where qualified.

Responsibilities

Perform field installation, repair, and modification work.
Fit, measure, lay out, square, align, clamp, tack, and prepare components onsite or in the shop.
Work from drawings, sketches, samples, field measurements, job notes, and supervisor direction.
Prepare for field work by confirming drawings, measurements, tools, materials, equipment, PPE, and site requirements before leaving for the job.
Build or assist with jigs, fixtures, templates, and repeat-part setups.
Support shop fitting, fabrication preparation, and welding work when field work is not required.
Perform welding where qualified and directed.
Follow NST job notes, supervisor direction, and applicable welding procedures/qualifications.
Follow customer-site safety, access, permit, PPE, hot-work, confined-space, working-at-heights, and other project-specific requirements.
Communicate field conditions, job progress, material/tooling needs, and site changes back to the shop or supervisor as required.
Report fit-up issues, drawing conflicts, field changes, material concerns, site-access concerns, permit/safety concerns, or other issues before proceeding.
Represent North Star Technical professionally at customer sites and in public-access work areas.

Requirements

Strong fitting, layout, measuring, and problem-solving ability.
Field installation or repair experience.
Experience working with carbon steel and stainless steel.
SMAW/stick welding ability for field installation and repair work.
GMAW, FCAW, and/or GTAW experience for shop fabrication support is an asset.
Ability to read drawings, weld symbols, sketches, field measurements, and job notes.
Ability to work independently onsite and communicate clearly with the shop/supervisor.
Valid driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract.
CWB experience or welding qualifications in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, carbon steel, or stainless steel are assets.
Forklift, overhead crane, aerial lift, working-at-heights, confined-space, hot-work, or similar field-safety training is an asset.

Preferred Assets

Experience with railings, stair rails, guarding, platforms, brackets, or industrial installation work.
Experience building jigs, fixtures, templates, or repeat-part setups.
Experience in a custom fabrication, repair, millwright, or machine-shop environment.

Role Summary

This role is best suited for a field-capable fitter/welder. The successful candidate must be able to plan work, fit accurately, solve practical onsite problems, follow site-specific requirements, communicate effectively, and support shop fabrication when field work is not required.

Pay: $30.00-$50.00 per hour
