Job Summary
6. The Tax Manager is a senior role responsible for the preparation, review, and oversight of personal and corporate income tax engagements across a diverse client portfolio. This individual will bring deep technical expertise in Canadian tax compliance, a strong track record of high-volume T1 and T2 preparation, and the professional drive to pursue or complete the CPA In-Depth Tax Program (CICA). The Tax Manager will serve as a primary liaison with the CRA, lead client-facing communications, and play a key role in shaping the tax department's processes and growth.
Hours
7. The Tax Manager is expected to work from 9:00am–5:30pm Monday to Friday. Hours are expected to increase significantly during personal and corporate tax season. This role is based primarily in-office with flexibility as determined by management.
Job Responsibilities
8. Prepare and review personal (T1) and corporate (T2) income tax returns for a broad client base including owner-managed businesses
9. Manage and oversee high-volume tax return preparation, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and CRA compliance across all filings
10. Work on tax planning engagements for owner-managed Canadian domestic clients
11. Play a key role in managing the processes, procedures, and workflow of the tax department during tax season
12. Draft, review, and manage correspondence with the CRA, including responses to assessments, audit inquiries, and other administrative matters
13. Serve as the primary client-facing representative for tax matters — explaining processes, resolving issues, and building long-term client relationships
14. Prepare and review quarterly and year-end tax provisions and related reconciliations
15. Manage and track tax installment schedules for corporate and individual clients
16. Coordinate with the bookkeeping and accounting teams in the preparation of financial statements used for tax filings
17. Identify technical tax issues, conduct research, and implement appropriate planning solutions
18. Participate in the analysis of new tax legislation and recommend planning strategies for clients
19. Coach, mentor, and support junior tax staff; delegate assignments and ensure quality control
20. Actively manage all engagement phases including budgeting, work-in-progress, and file completion
21. Assist in marketing the firm's tax services and participate in networking and business development events
Competencies
22. Minimum 5 years of experience in personal and corporate tax preparation within a public accounting firm (required)
23. Demonstrated completion of a minimum of 500 T1 personal tax returns and 100 T2 corporate tax returns
24. Currently enrolled in or aspiring to complete the CPA In-Depth Tax Program (CICA) — enrollment or active progress strongly preferred
25. Thorough understanding of Canadian personal and corporate tax legislation, CRA processes, and compliance requirements
26. Experience managing or liaising with the CRA on assessments, audits, and correspondence
27. Exceptional client communication skills — able to explain complex tax matters clearly and professionally
28. Strong ability to multitask and manage competing deadlines across a high-volume client portfolio
29. Detail-oriented with a high standard of accuracy and a diligent, proactive work ethic
30. Ability to take ownership of engagements, solve complex problems, and implement practical solutions
31. Demonstrated leadership and team mentorship capabilities
32. Solid understanding of business professionalism and the ability to work independently and collaboratively
33. Knowledge of tax and accounting software: TaxCycle, Karbon, QuickBooks, Caseware (preferred)
34. Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Outlook, Excel, and Word
Education Required
35. University Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required)
36. CPA designation or active progress toward designation is a strong asset
37. Completion of or active enrollment in the CPA In-Depth Tax Program (CICA) is strongly preferred
Compensation
38. $80,000 – $95,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
