Role Summary:
The Controls Specialist is responsible for overseeing all automation control systems on the plant floor. This role provides both strategic and day-to-day support for automation systems to ensure efficient plant operations. This includes managing and implementing system changes in collaboration with equipment vendors, supporting daily operational activities related to control systems, and ensuring systems comply with established standards and incident response protocols.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Install, maintain, and troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and other automation equipment.
- Perform regular inspections and calibrations of control systems.
- Work closely with Engineering and Maintenance teams to support continuous improvement projects.
- Interpret electrical and control schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Maintain documentation for all control systems and update changes as needed.
- Support the manufacturer in achieving their targeted Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) in the maintenance and operations department and ensure continuous improvement.
- Responsible for improving and sustaining the uptime of designated machine centers.
- Assurance of equipment reliability; preventative and continual maintenance.
- Provides input to management to facilitate effective cost reduction, work simplification, scheduling, or other continuous improvement measures.
- Participate and/or lead special assignments when necessary.
- Report the status of equipment in relation to shift.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Management.
Professional Qualifications & Core Competencies:
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve automation system issues under pressure.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and control schematics.
- Basic knowledge of computer systems (Microsoft Office, maintenance software).
- Responds to changing priorities and adapts to new technologies.
- Willingness to learn and implement new automation tools or protocols.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple assignments efficiently.
- Meets deadlines without compromising quality or safety.
- Clear communication with team members, engineers, and management
Education & Experience:
- Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, Mechatronics, or a related technical field is preferred.
- Post-secondary education in Engineering, Science, or a related discipline with a technical background
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with industrial control systems. Experience with Siemens control system is an asset.
- Strong understanding of PLC programming, HMI configuration, and industrial networks.
