The Opportunity:
We are seeking a Senior Manager, Strategic Planning, to help shape the future of Demand Side Management (DSM) in Nova Scotia. Reporting to the Senior Director, Engineering & Planning, this role provides strategic leadership and trusted advice to senior leadership, helping to position EfficiencyOne as a leader in delivering innovative, evidence-based solutions aligned with the province's evolving electricity system needs.
In this role, you will translate electricity system, market, and policy signals into clear strategic recommendations that support organizational planning, portfolio direction, and long-term positioning. You will work closely with internal leaders and external stakeholders to assess opportunities for growth, innovation, and diversification within Nova Scotia’s evolving energy market.
This is a senior leadership role for a strategic thinker who combines experience in the electricity sector, the utility industry, or system planning with strong technical expertise, business acumen, and relationship-building skills. You are energized by complex challenges, comfortable influencing senior decision-makers, and motivated by the opportunity to identify emerging opportunities, assess future risks, and help shape the long-term direction of energy efficiency and demand-side management in Nova Scotia. Drawing on a deep understanding of electricity system planning, market dynamics, and policy trends, you will help guide strategic decisions that support Nova Scotia's clean energy transition.
What you’ll do
Lead Strategic Planning
- Lead the Strategic Planning function within Engineering & Planning.
- Develop frameworks and recommendations that support DSM portfolio direction, competitiveness, and long-term positioning.
- Provide strategic advice to senior leadership on opportunities for growth, evolution, and diversification.
Provide Market and System Insight
- Lead EfficiencyOne’s engagement with key stakeholders around electricity and distribution system planning
- Monitor market dynamics, electrification trends, and policy developments.
- Translate engineering, emerging trends from leading jurisdictions, and Nova Scotia market signals into actionable strategic insight.
- Develop robust business cases, technical analyses, and strategic assessments to support executive decision-making.
Engage Stakeholders and Partners
- Lead technical engagement with key stakeholders, including the Nova Scotia Independent Energy System Operator, Nova Scotia Power, independent power producers, and government partners.
- Represent EfficiencyOne in external forums, technical working groups, and stakeholder consultations.
- Collaborate across internal teams to ensure strategic planning is informed by regulatory, program, evaluation, and innovation priorities.
What Will Help You Succeed?
- 15+ years of experience in a utility, distribution operator, or demand-side management environment.
- At least 5 years in a senior leadership role and 5 years leading engineering or technical teams.
- Strong understanding of electricity utility planning and operations, energy markets, and demand-side management.
- Expertise in energy efficiency best practices, strategic energy management, energy auditing, modeling, and business case development.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, and cross-functional leadership skills.
- Ability to assess complex issues, identify strategic opportunities, and influence decision-making.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Engineers Nova Scotia.
- Project Management Professional
In the first week, expect to:
- Meet with the Senior Director, Engineering & Planning, and key internal stakeholders across EfficiencyOne.
- Develop a high-level plan for your first 90 days in the role.
- Review core materials related to strategic planning, DSM, regulatory context, and market dynamics.
- Begin building relationships with internal teams and key external partners.
In the first month, expect to:
- Build organizational awareness and deepen your understanding of the people, priorities, and systems that shape strategic planning work.
- Meet with internal leaders across program delivery, innovation, regulatory, and evaluation functions.
- Strengthen your understanding of planning assumptions, market opportunities, and stakeholder priorities in Nova Scotia’s energy sector.
In the first three months, expect to:
- Establish priorities, planning frameworks, and reporting approaches for the Strategic Planning function.
- Identify emerging risks and opportunities within the Nova Scotia energy market and begin shaping strategic recommendations.
- Contribute to business planning, long-term roadmaps, and executive-level strategic discussions.
